I have a few thoughts...

  • Nokia 770: I got one of these last week, it's fairly basic. Web browser, limited email, RSS, other little apps. Awesome screen and 802.11b/g and bluetooth. Soon there will be an update to include IM and VoIP phone applications. Plus, it runs linux so there quite a few applications being developed. I'm looking forward to hopefully having VNC and Remote Desktop clients, so I don't need to bring my laptop everywhere at work. How about an Exchange server supporting Email/PIM application while we're at it, yah?
  • Blogs: They are so hard to read and keep up with. Even with RSS, its not easy. RSS is like looking through a telescope, it feels lonely and constricted. LiveJournal's Friends page feels much more warm.
  • Work:
    • Hiring: We're trying to hire a new technician and after getting it down to 2 candidates, we're totally split on which one we like. We're most likely going to re-open the position for applicants. See below.
    • Software: I'm pounding away at getting software ready for deployment to the elementary buildings. It's funny how these are shrink wrapped (retail) applications and yet it takes me days/weeks to prepare them for actual deployment and use. I even had to 'hack' one to get it to not be brain dead about its data file location.
    • Getting Things Done: It seems like I cannot sit down and focus on anything without being interrupted. Being asked a question or asked to do something. It's a good thing to be needed, but I could perform so much better in my job if I weren't helping out my coworkers all the time. It's like being the support for the support staff.
    • Staff: I've got two problems.
      • One: One of the technicians doesn't seem to want to learn. "The New Guy" has outpaced him in only a few months. He asks for the same things and cannot self-service himself.
        • Example: He will fix the computer, but requires another technician's aid in prepairing it for use again. He hasn't learned the software required for it, something "The New Guy" can already do. (It's just point-and-click).
      • Two: Another technician gets in a mood whenever there's a disagreement that doesn't end in him winning (either a deadlock or he 'loses') or something is said to him and he totally overanalysizes it and takes it the wrong way. He gets in these moods where he only wants to do exactly what is required of him and no more. He silently goes about his job without being a real part of the 'team'. I might not have such a problem with it if I didn't know what he was capable of. In a few weeks he gets back to his old self, then something happens and the cycle happens all over again.
        • Example: When we were 'discussing' the candidates for the technician position a deadlock occured and he just said that he would have prefered to just be left out of the decisionmaking procress in the future.
    • Everything else: Basically on hold until the first two items are finished.

Does anyone have any favorite communication/networking sites? Particularly in the vein of the above links?

Job Notice:

If you or someone you know can fix computers, leave a comment. Cincinnati, Ohio area. My employer is looking for another support technician. The position will not be fixing servers, configuring network equipment, and will involve a lot of hard work during the summer. The main duty is fixing computers (we have 1400-1500) and being the customer service 'arm' of a IT department. The job is full time, has great benefits, and is year round. I can probably answer any questions in the comments.
