interesting thoughts

I think I have decided to write my doctoral thesis in art history on legendary artists and mental illness. I will include such greats as Loenardo da Vinci, William Blake, and Van Gogh just to name the ones that pop into my head. This may be a bit premature, but it interests me.

Also, I think I like photography most of all. I like the availability of the medium and the necessity for creativity in making your print stand out from all the others. You can be a true artistic genius without actually being able to draw a realistic looking human figure. If photography had been around in the 1500's, perhaps the British would have had more of an influence in the art world. Too bad there are only roughly 3 historically famous British artists......and that I will be spending an entire semester studying them. Sometimes the world is cruel, the brits are trendy and fashionable not artistic, they are too stiff and sour (and they try too hard to be very anti-french, which lessens their chances at art because art is a very french way of being--in a historical sense)

Also people, a museum is like a library. You are there learning about history, it should be quiet, voices should be whispers.....one of my biggest pet peeves as an art person is people who yell and scream and interrupt your silent reverie in front of an icon of culture.....for instance the screaming baby in front of the Turner today in the National Gallery. The mother absolutely refused to remove the child so I was stuck thinking about how much I hated the wailing of the child as opposed to the use of light that was so revolutionary to Turner.

I suppose that is all for now. London is amazing, just wish I could enjoy it without going to class and learning about how Constable was overlooked as an artist (fireside paintings of green meadows and willow trees are not really my forte). Let me just say, Constable was British, all he knew how to paint was grass and clouds (granted he was very good at it) but it isn't worth my time to asses every painting, they all look alike! That is why they are mass-reproduced on cookie and chocolate wrappers.

The end
