Flexing its political muscle over business and technology issues is nothing new for Internet giant Google. But as for general politics, the company tends to stay out of the fray.
Today, Google departed from the norm by taking an official corporate position against Prop. 8, the ballot measure that would amend the California constitution to ban gay marriage. In a blog post, co-founder Sergey Brin wrote:
"While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 - we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love."
Brin explained Google's normal reluctance to weigh in on social issues as a product of its diverse workforce who cut across the political and social spectrum. But he said that the proposal would have a "chilling and discriminatory effect" on many of the company's employees.
So much love <3
