The roster of Clarion West Instructors for 2010:
Michael Bishop
Maureen McHugh
Nnedi Okorafor
Graham Joyce
Ellen Datlow
Ian McDonald
This list comes out of the research, discussions, reading, and deliberations of the Clarion West Workshop Committee. Each name on it is oh-so-carefully considered. Is a given candidate a good teacher? An interesting writer? Familiar with different aspects of the field? With writing different subgenres and forms--especially the short story, the workshop's primary focus? Do they have the respect of their peers? Have they won any awards? How well are they known within the genre and without it? Will they have the sheer stamina necessary to teach full time, full-tilt, for an entire week?
It's a Good Thing if the list taken as a whole represents some of the diversity present in the field of speculative fiction in terms of gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, race, geography, and education. But no six names can do this perfectly.
Recently I've been asked about how this list comes to be. In response, the main thing I can do is repeat what I mentioned above, that the list is put together by the Workshop Committee. The Workshop Committee consists of volunteers, people who've experienced Clarion West as students and/or as schleppers, sorters, staplers, and so on--those who have made significant contributions of sweat equity to the cause and are invested in its success.
Clarion West is always
looking for volunteers.
