Part I
Yoochun leaned back into his seat and turned his head to smile at Junsu, sitting beside him. His hands were clammy from sweat and the orange juice they were drinking minutes earlier was now all over the floor. It had spilled when the plane went vertical.
"We're going to crash," Junsu had said, his voice shaky, and Yoochun just held his hand even tighter.
"Aren't you afraid?" Junsu asked him.
Yoochun shook his head fervently. "No," sounding strong for Junsu's sake.
Junsu said nothing.
"Look, the land is coming to view in the distance. You can see Korea right outside the window," Yoochun said smiling. "We're almost home.."
Junsu turned away, closing his eyes. "I don't want to see." His voice cracked.
Yoochun then ran out of things to say and they were quiet for a long time. They focused on hearing the screaming all around them and the horrible noise of high-pitched whistling, the sound that the plane was creating.
"We're going into the water," a little girl behind them was saying, tugging on the hem of her mother's dress. "Mommy, we're going into the water. I don't know how to swim, yet."
The sound accelerated to an unbelievable height when the nose dived and everyone clutched at their ears.
Yoochun tightened his grip on Junsu, betraying his calm exterior. "Junsu! Junsu... I...I wanted to tell you..."
The impact of the plane colliding with the surface of the water caused them both to fall out of their seats. Junsu turned just as the windows shattered.
He looked at Yoochun underwater, hair floating like seaweed. Slow, without gravity.
What is it? His mind was racing, his eyes searching.
Junsu, Yoochun mouthed, wanting to cry when he felt the water enter his lungs. I love you.
Part II
The neon lights rotated around the ceiling so quickly that Changmin's forehead fell to the table. "Ugh...why am I even here...?" He asked himself. He couldn't even hear his own voice through the noise.
For some reason he noticed all the empty glasses in front of him and his eyes widened. "I thought I only asked for one glass of water," he said, scratching at his hair. Sighing heavily, he got up from his seat, which required a lot more effort than usual. He had to use both his hands.
Standing straight was unthinkable and he immediately went to the wall for support.
"I'm so tired."
Reaching into his left pocket, he found his cellphone. His fingers were pressing the speed dial number before he could stop himself, like they knew it was the right number to call from the beginning.
"Hello?" Someone instantly picked up.
Changmin exhaled at the voice on the other end of the line. "Jae..."
"Changmin?" A pause. "Where are you? I can't even hear you....speak louder."
"I...I...... can you take me home?" He asked hopefully.
"Do you want me to pick you up? Changmin, Changmin.. answer me!"
Changmin gave up on trying to hear Jae and hung up, closing his eyes and slinking down the wall behind him. "He must be busy. I'm very selfish."
When he opened his eyes again, he was breathing in the fresh night air on the sidewalk in front of the building. He immediately clutched at his head. Feeling for the brick wall, he managed to get up and decided he better get started on walking.
"Maybe to the bustop. But I don't have any money. Can they charge to SM? Ow... my head...it really hurts."
He would've jumped out of his skin when he heard a car suddenly honking at him, but his senses were numbed. He didn't realize it until there were fast footsteps and a hand on his shoulder.
"Changmin!"
He turned around and smiled slowly at Jaejoong. "Hey, Jae... thanks for finding me," he said softly, and fell onto the sidewalk.
--
When he opened his eyes for the second time, he was strapped into the passenger seat. The bright orange from the lampposts illuminated the darkness every few seconds like a recurring dream. Changmin shifted his eyes to the driver and the cross-shaped earring glinted in the dark.
"How did you know where I would be?" He asked, his own voice sounding foreign to him.
Jae turned to look at him. "Ah, you go to the same places I go to, don't you....?" He asked with a smile, not expecting an answer.
Changmin turned away to look out the window again. I wish he didn't know that, he thought. He knows too much.
It was almost two hours already. They should've been home.
"Hyung... where are we going?" He asked quietly. His head was still numb.
"I want to take you somewhere, Min. I never have this kind of time...I..." He gulped. Quietly, but Changmin heard it. "Hey Min, are you feeling any better?"
He was speaking in such a desperate voice that Changmin felt like telling him, I feel great. And we have loads of time, what are you talking about? Don't be sad, hyung. That's what Changmin would have always said. But he didn't.
Jaejoong noticed the silence and he rushed to fill it. "Heh, I guess you're right. But we've been so busy lately, don't you think, Changmin?" He continued talking and asking questions and Changmin never answered; just listened to him. Why... he is never like this.
When Jaejoong stopped, Changmin sat up in his seat to try to identify where they were.
That's when he saw that Jaejoong was on the wrong side of the road.
"Jae... oh my God... are you drunk? JAE!"
When Changmin saw the headlights of an approaching truck, he didn't stop himself from grabbing onto the steering wheel and causing the car to swerve to their left. They both lost control of the wheel and neither of them screamed when they got hit by an oncoming vehicle, the impact crushing them into the adjoining wall.
Am I crying?
Changmin didn't open his eyes but then he realized the situation.
He didn't want to know whose blood was dripping down his cheek.
--
The third time he opened his eyes, he was surrounded in white. The sickening kind of white that was too clean, too sanitized.
The air smells sick. It's the hospital. Are we in Seoul? I wonder where everyone is.
Then he remembered.
"Jae!" he screamed out loud, as if it was stuck in his throat since that night. At least he thought that he screamed, but the nurse asked him what he was whispering about and how he was feeling. But he didn't want to have to repeat himself and looked away from her. He listened to her leave the room, calling for the doctor.
Changmin found out that they both had been unconscious for a week.
But Jaejoong was in a coma.
"Why am I not in a coma?" He kept asking the doctor.
"You both suffered from equally severe injuries," the doctor said, saying each word slowly as if he was afraid that Changmin couldn't comprehend anything yet. "But you were lucky." He paused. "You've awaken first." They turned to the next bed over at the same time, the one by the window.
The morning light was hitting his face like an angel.
"Oh, Jae... what have I done?" Changmin asked himself.
Over and over and over.
--
Yunho came to visit three times a week, then every two days, then every day, and then Changmin thought that he lived in the hospital like they did.
He's injured, too, Changmin thought logically. That's why he must be staying here. I wonder what it is.
Changmin stayed in bed and didn't want to practice walking. He'd look over at his left and see the limp form on the bed and then he couldn't eat the soup, even though he tried, or watch the TV, either.
When the doctor came by to check up on him again, Changmin spoke up. "I don't want to get well," he told the doctor. "I'm not lucky at all."
Changmin couldn't sleep but he pretended to. His eyes were swollen from crying.
Every night, when all the lights were out and Yunho thought that Changmin was sleeping, he would kneel at Jaejoong's bed and cry.
Stop crying, Changmin wanted to say. But "I'm so selfish, Yunho, so selfish..." came out of his mouth instead one day.
Changmin thought that he'd be surprised to find that he was awake the whole time, but Yunho only turned around from the bed to look at him. Maybe he knew all along.
His eyes were shining in the dark and then Changmin knew absolutely everything.
