“Let’s go, Selphie,” Kairi beckons, her soft hand on Selphie’s elbow. Selphie is watching the waves or, more accurately, the bottle in the waves. It dips and bobs, sways with the current and glistens in the setting sun. Kairi’s bottle, Kairi’s faith, Kairi’s utterly hopeless and absolutely perfect attempt to find what has been lost: a boy they cannot remember and a boy who doesn’t want to be found.
They were Selphie’s boys once, that much she knows, no matter how dim the memory: her almost-best-friends (only, they told her, because they were already best friends with each other) just like Tidus and Wakka (who had told her the same thing). She would like to be the one to save them-to drag these wayward heroes home again-but she won’t. It’s Kairi’s job now, and she needs to bow out gracefully.
“Yeah, okay. You wanna go get ice cream on the way home?”
“Sure.” Kairi smiles and picks up her bag. “You’re buying this time.”
“Oh, fine.” Selphie grins right back into those blue eyes, somehow knows everything will be okay, and as the two girls leave the beach, she doesn’t need to look back.
