Lusophobe

I learned a new word today. I've been playing too much Civ III recently, and have been having great success with Portugal. Expansionist and Seafaring, yet somehow I've discovered Steam Power in the 1600s...

ANYWAYS

I decided to read Wikipedia's article on Portugal, history, language, that sort of thing. I was clicking through links, and found this word.

Lusophobia: a hositilty toward Portugal or the Portuguese.

At first glance, I thought this would be filed under the same category as other phobias. Snakes, spiders, other crawly things. Proper phobias!

"OH GOD BEES"

"MOTHERFUCKING SNAKES"

"OH SHIT PORTUGUESE. LET'S GET OUT OF HERE"

Unfortunately, this is not the case. It refers to anti-Portugal sentiments in Brazil and other former colonies.

Speaking of Wikipedias, check out this Something Awful article about "Wikigroaning" A short excerpt to describe it:

"The premise is quite simple. First, find a useful Wikipedia article that normal people might read. For example, the article called "Knight." Then, find a somehow similar article that is longer, but at the same time, useless to a very large fraction of the population. In this case, we'll go with "Jedi Knight." Open both of the links and compare the lengths of the two articles. Compare not only that, but how well concepts are explored, and the greater professionalism with which the longer article was likely created. Are you looking yet? Get a good, long look. Yeah. Yeeaaah, we know, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. (We're calling it Wikigroaning for a reason.)"

Fun stuff.
