For the second time that day, Hermione found herself interrupted from her peaceful read. “So? Spill it, Missy!” Ginny dropped into the armchair opposite hers in the Gryffindor Common Room. Giving up on her book, Hermione sighed and looked up. “Spill what, Gin’?”

The redhead gave her an incredulous look. “You’re kidding, right? The entire school is abuzz over this new ‘guest lecturer’ and how much time he seems to spend with you. Over the last two days, you’ve been spotted at his side on several occasions! So. Spill!”

Hermione blushed. Had she really been spending that much time with Oz? That’s Mr Osbourne to you, Ms Granger, she scolded herself. “We just get along well. We mostly talk about boring stuff anyway, you know, one book geek to another.”

“Oh, he’s a book geek? Mighty handsome for a book geek, wouldn’t you say?” Ginny wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

“Ginny!”

“What? He’s positively delicious. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed, Ms Oblivious. Besides, it’s healthy to have a crush on a teacher sometimes. Outch!” Hermione’s pillow had hit her straight in the face. “I do not have a crush,” she squeaked indignantly. “We’re just friends. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go make some Wolfsbane potion for Remus.” Ginny wasn’t so easily defeated, however, and offered to help the bright witch, hoping to extract more information while Hermione was preoccupied with other things.

They barely made it into the hallway when they ran into the topic of Ginny’s ongoing conversation (Hermione had decided she had no part in it). Somehow Oz seemed to blush a darker shade of crimson while he uttered a strained “Hello ladies.” An equally crimson Hermione gave him a shy “Hello Mr Osbourne”, while Ginny just went for “Hey there”. Oz seemed to have lost his entire ‘teacher aura’ as he had dubbed it in earlier conversations and Ginny could swear he was fidgeting, though he hid it well.

“So… Embarrassingly, I’m lost again,” he grinned self-consciously and Hermione fought the urge to shove him up a wall and snog him senseless. “You ladies wouldn’t know the way to the Prefect’s Bathroom, would you?” It was only then that the girls noticed he was carrying a towel and some soap. “There was a bit of a err… situation with my tub and I’m going to be filthy all week unless I find that bathroom…”

Both Ginny’s and Hermione’s face turned blank for a second. Either young woman would mind Oz -Mr Osbourne- being filthy for a while. Hermione’s brain was the first to kick back into gear. “Why don’t I show you the way, Sir.” Oz’s head tilted to the side as if curious about something, but he gladly agreed to her offer.

As Ginny was forced into retreat, Oz fell into step easily with Hermione as she led the way to the Prefect’s Bathroom. He seemed uneasy to talk about something and Hermione decided to just confront him on it. “Was there something you wanted to ask?” He shrugged absently. “I don’t like the sound of ‘Mr Osbourne’. Too much like my old man, not enough like Oz. I couldn’t help but notice you using it all the time.”

Hermione swallowed. She didn’t like the sound of ‘Mr Osbourne’ either, but in the presence of her fellow students, she felt she couldn’t afford to call him ‘Oz’. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I don’t know how to act around you when my friends are around. They all know why you’re here, but still… It’s strange to…” -to be so comfortable and at peace with you, even when we’re not talking at all- “… to be such good friends with you, while they don’t know you at all. Above all, I’ve been taught to respect my teachers and that I should always use their title when they’re teaching.”

Oz nodded his understanding. He stopped and noticing him missing from her side, she turned towards him. “Would you mind,” he hesitated, “just calling me ‘Oz’ outside of classes? It gives me the creeps to be my ol’ man the whole time, see?” That grin again. Hermione almost had to hold on to the wall to keep her knees from buckling underneath her. “Sure thing, Oz,” she uttered weakly.
