i'm really too tired and still have to study to write a long post today, but did want to tell you that we had experienced aftershocks from an earthquake in get this - VIRGINIA...
i was in class, we were doing some bookwork learning about how to professionally shampoo client's har, and some chemistry on how shampoos and conditioners work, when the floor began to shake. at first we all thought that since our school is on the 2nd floor of a 3 storey building, it was just people moving about, making the floor vibrate. then it shook HARDER, and the whiteboard shook furiously. at this point we all seemed to forghet the things we were taught as kids about hiding under our desks/tables, whatever, and many tried for the exit. i called grey bard on break and she told me that she was reading, thought it was if all things, a rat, and felt the shakes. she then found out it wasn't and her mother in Pennsylvania felt it. i messaged my mum and asked her, she said she was asleep and may have felt a bang but thought it was a dream. that was very very eerie. even my syed and irfan on long island felt it as well. what were YOU doing hen it happened? did u feel it where YOU are? if you're a friend or want to be a friend, and NOT a freaky stalker, friend me and let me know your story. i'm curious to know everyone's earthquake story!

RALEIGH, N.C. --

North Carolina felt the effects of a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Virginia Tuesday afternoon.

Later in the day Tuesday several aftershocks were registered. The first aftershock was a 2.8 registered at 2:46 p.m., the second was a 2.2 at 3:20 p.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 1:51 p.m. earthquake was half a mile deep and centered near Mineral, Va., about 40 miles northwest of Richmond. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill and as far north as Ontario, Canada. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated.

Two nuclear reactors at the North Anna Power Station in the same county as the epicenter were automatically taken off line by safety systems around the time of the earthquake, said Roger Hannah, a spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The Dominion-operated power plant is being run off of four emergency diesel generators, which are supplying power for critical safety equipment. Hannah said the agency was not immediately aware of any damage at nuclear power plants in the Southeast.

Obama and many of the nation's leaders were out of town on August vacation when the quake struck at 1:51 p.m. The shaking was felt on the Martha's Vineyard golf course as Obama was just starting a round.

NBC-17 viewer Barbara Guillory, who lives on North Hills Drive, says she felt her house shake around 1:50 p.m.

"I used to live in California and have experienced several of them, including the Loma Prieta Quake in 1989, so I know what they feel like," Guillory said. "It was very odd to experience one here."

Cecil Nance says he felt his house in Raleigh tremour at 1:56 p.m.

"I was working on my laptop in the living room when the house began to shake," Nance recalled.

"I rose to investigate if I had laundry on. As I walked through the kitchen in noticed my cup of coffee shaking in the table. I confirmed the washing machine was not on so I walked around the house to see what may have caused the house to shake. Nothing discovered. I reentered my home and just heard on the radio that the quake hit D.C."

No injuries or damage has been reported in North Carolina at this point. Residents are urged not to call 911 about the recent earthquake unless there are life safety issues, a specific emergency or they see damage in the right-of-way that might be a hazard.

At the Pentagon in northern Virginia, a low rumbling built and built to the point that the building was shaking. People ran into the corridors of the government's biggest building and as the shaking continued there were shouts of "Evacuate! Evacuate!"

The U.S. Park Service evacuated and closed all National Mall monuments and memorials. At Reagan National Airport outside Washington, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking. Authorities announced it was an earthquake and all flights were put on hold.

In New York, the 26-story federal courthouse in lower Manhattan began swaying and hundreds of people were seen leaving the building. Court officers weren't letting people back in.

The quake came a day after an earthquake in Colorado toppled groceries off shelves and caused minor damage to homes in the southern part of the state and in northern New Mexico. No injuries were reported as aftershocks continued Tuesday.

In Charleston, W.Va., hundreds of workers left the state Capitol building and employees at other downtown office buildings were asked to leave temporarily.

"The whole building shook," said Jennifer Bundy, a spokeswoman for the state Supreme Court. "You could feel two different shakes. Everybody just kind of came out on their own."

In Ohio, where office buildings swayed in Columbus and Cincinnati and the press box at the Cleveland Indians' Progressive Field shook. At least one building near the Statehouse was evacuated in downtown Columbus.

In downtown Baltimore, the quake sent office workers into the streets, where lamp posts swayed slightly as they called family and friends to check in.

Social media site Twitter lit up with reports of the earthquake from people using the site up and down the U.S. eastern seaboard.

"People pouring out of buildings and onto the sidewalks and Into Farragut Park in downtown DC...," tweeted Republican strategist Kevin Madden.

"did you feel earthquake in ny? It started in richmond va!" tweeted Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group.

John Gurlach, air traffic controller at the Morgantown Municipal Airport was in a 40-foot-tall tower when the earth trembled.

"There were two of us looking at each other saying, 'What's that?'" he said, even as a commuter plane was landing. "It was noticeably shaking. It felt like a B-52 unloading."

Immediately, the phone rang from the nearest airport in Clarksburg, and a computer began spitting out green strips of paper - alerts from other airports in New York and Washington issuing ground stops "due to earthquake."
