http://chikteihasman.blogspot.com/2010/08/new-place-finally.html
it has been a long battle, and i've had to grind my teeth over a few things a few times, but i've finally got a place. it's in elmhurst, queens (ny of course). i will be in a small room temporarily, and my cats will reside in a basement enclave. i will have to help out around the complex when not looking for work or other commitments, but it'll give me something to do with myself in idle time. when the room is ready i will move downstairs in the basement. it will be decent really.....the only other person down there will be the superintendent. both the landlorrd and super are friendly caring and incredibly accommodating. she did everything she could so i could have a place. the price was a bit higher than i wanted, but not incredibly unreasonable. it'll be 175.00/week. the basement has a main corridor, and i am free to use the microwave and fridge there. i'm going to assume that ill have the exclusive use. it will be semi private because the super sleeps in his room but doesn't live there. and he doesn't seem like he'll be giving up the room any time soon. there's also a little garden patio area that will be quite lovely once we clean it up. i think after some work this will be a decent and lovely place. im very satisfied with it. frankly, though i have to share the bathroom (unless there is one in the basement which i didnt see) i think it will be as nace or even nicer than if i had a studio apartment. the super and i may also work to put in a little bar area/enclave type thing in the basement. frankly, i'm excited to work with him and do this. worry not - i have no crush whatsoever, but i am eager to make new friends, and what better place to start?! the better your relationship with the people who have control over your housing, the better. there is a wendy's right next to us, loads of shops nearby, the one lady who is renting in the same place has cats so im in a cat friendly place. the subway and a bank are not far away, it's on flat land, and from what i understand the room will be a decent size. i'm quite pleased with it. i also got to see catface!
also, i had alot of fun at the starbucks near port authority, whilst waiting for grey bard. i was wearing a salwar kameez which proved to be quite a hit. i was sitting in the window, almost as a display piece, and guys kept coming by and smiling. a few fellow desi women smiled too, as though they were happy to see our culture hadn't been forgotten. one guy kept smiling and oogling, walking back and forth a couple times, causing me to giggle. another walked past, smiling, and to my surprised came in to chat to me. he wondered why i was dressed as i was, and i explained that im mixed heritage, and have gone back to my roots. he was very glad. i had a few sardars also smiled as they passed (a couple lovely sohna turban uncles). Wait till i start wearing my dastaar regularly! whoooohoooo! they won't know what hit 'em, cuz im a REAl sikh, not a gori or firangi cult ass kisser! it was great though. i had a ball! i had been feeling a bit down because things were going so fast and i had not felt caught up enough. i'm getting there and now that i have a place and some sort of direction i feel alot better. i had mentioned before that i was going to start a series called 'nirmal vich new york'. i will do this as a new tag and series rather than a seperate blog. i was considering giving it it's own blog but wasn't too warm on the idea after all. it will do better as a feature post. every so often. basically, i will be roving about frequently, and will note interesting stuff i find and post an entry about it. i can't wait to try the bubble teas and stuff like that! Speaking of, here are a few finds -
http://www.tenren.com/snacks.html check out the funky snack list! coooooooooool!
i gotta try this place sumtime. im dying to try the Pearl, Tapioca, and Bubble teas. (i will of course report on them!)
http://www.rickshawdumplings.com/ grey bard showed me this. they have cheap, fast and incredible tasting won ton type asian dumplings. i have decided this will be a place where i will not become a stranger to. plus madison square garden is nearby, and it's along my subway stop (hahah i have my own subway stops now...to get 'home' ill be using the 'r'.) i had the chicken saag (chicken with spinach) dumpling. it's a mix of a very mild indian and asian flavour. it was awesome. we both had the chocolate soup dumplings. they were amazing. the place looks fancy and upper class but u can get a reasonable snack or light meal. the dumplings were 1.00 each. i'm not sure if all are, but the ones i and we got were. i will like to try the duck ones and mix them up with the chicken saag and a few others. i just keep enjoying more and more!
lastly, i was also finally able to jailbreak my phone (especially cool now that it's be government legalized), even after the latest update. it's incredibly easy -
go here with ur phone -
http://www.jailbreakme.com/faq.html then follow the instructions. i had missed my video background of harmandir sahib (it pans back and forth to view the area) and my phone greeting me with a bani and closing with vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh.
i will have to fix hopstop though. that suddenly started to crash. ugh. also i frget if id mentioned before but id suggest installing rock your phone (rockyourphone.com/) as it keeps track of your jailbroken apps, allowing you to back the list up, and reinstall them at the hit of a button. it is a lifesaver, especially if u have alot of stuff installed!
