David S. Allen III of Tompkinsville, a restoration artist and musician, died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, following a short illness. He was 57.

Born in St. Vincent's Hospital, Mr. Allen was raised in 2002 Oakwood and graduated from St. Peter's Boys High School, New Brighton.

He lived in Elizabeth, N.J., for several years, before returning to Staten Island about five years ago, moving to Tompkinsville.

From 1969 to 1972, Mr. Allen served as an able-bodied seaman in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS McCloy, which was docked in Norfolk, Va.

Mr. Allen was a free-lance musician, songwriter and restoration painter. He played rhythm and blues and country music on the bass guitar -- and also played with the group, The Saddle Tramps.

Surviving are his son, Steven; his daughter, Samantha Allen; his mother, Vera Armstrong; two brothers, Michael and Jack, and a sister, Ronnee Balogh.

The funeral service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. The arrangements include cremation.
