10 things

1. Rarely have I felt a sense of history happening around me quite like watching the debate tonight. This will be quite a story to tell my kids, I think. I hope it has a happy ending. This was probably the best debate of the 3, too. Much more new material and less talking-point cruise control. Schieffer also showed his veteran news chops with excellent moderating. I wish the first debate had been this good.

2. I got a universal remote finally and it's the best $50 I've spent in a while. Took a couple hours to set up but I'll save that time in remote-juggling in a couple months. Plus it's much shinier than most remotes. That's important.

3. There's this girl Kristin, and she's pretty great. I am very blessed.

4. I've resolved to buy a real DJ controller using the money from Becca's wedding, and am nearly crosseyed with anticipation. If you've seen some of the weddings I've done previously and would be interested in having me around for yours, I look forward to helping you with that in the near future.

5. Recent podcast subscriptions: Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, Penn State Wall Street Bootcamp, Pearl Church

6. I have been sleeping very poorly since coming back from Portland. I'm not sure what to do to get ahead of it, as so far as I can figure out it's simply post-vacation blues.

7. My manager is mostly back from paternity leave, which is excellent. I continue to be impressed by his ability to keep our team running as a cohesive unit in the face of longer and longer odds.

8. I've nearly lost 1/3 of the money in my retirement fund. If I was considering retiring soon this would be most troubling. As it stands I am merely thankful that I am not, and wondering when would be a good time to start putting money into it again. If 2008 is anything like 1929-33, I'd say 2010 or so.

9. I pre-ordered a G1, and the anticipation of its arrival has mostly served to amplify my aggravation with my existing handset. However, it did set me up to trade it for a nice mattress, so it may yet serve its purpose.

10. Less beer and more sleep, food and training would probably do me better this week. I feel a stage change about to happen that has been a very long time coming. I'm turning 26 soon, and that has given me an opportunity to consider what I've done with 25. I have the idea that most people that have passed 25 wish they could go back to it, and as I pass it myself, I can feel the scope of my still very broad horizons narrow slightly. The play-everything-by-ear possibilities of young adulthood that I both feared and relished have some darker edges around them now. I can't, for example, party for 5 vacation days and come back ready to keep it going. It takes days to catch up. I'm sure this trend will continue but this is the start of it and it's a little sobering. An opportunity to say, I suppose, that I am going to get older one way or another, and I may as well do the best I can.
