Happy Solstice

Jun 22, 2006 16:31

Yesterday being the solstice, i spent a lot of time in the sun. What? Is that jess with... a tan??? Sort of, a little, i think. I look a little bit healthier, not AS pasty.

I've been seeing this really sweet girl named Megan, she's a librarian in training. *nerd love*. It's meant a lot of out-of-my-apartment stuff. Yay! Last Friday we went to the NY Aquarium. I overdressed: i hadn't realized it was on the beach & mostly an outdoor thing. There were no penguins, but all else was enjoyable. She likes to daydream & stare as much as i do: it was like playing Where's Waldo? with funny under-the-sea friends. I made friends with the eels. Apparently, i have to be strange wherever i go. Megan & i made friends with a particularly affluent walrus. He showed his sophistication by gnawing on one of his flippers & making an irreplicable sound. Hilarious. We watched the sea otter being fed & i understood what Laurie meant about my mom reminding her of an otter.

I like the aquarium: the jellyfish exhibit up now is dumbed down, but still fascinating. There's some interpretive vocal art in the first room; improv jellyfish poetry? The aquarium is bigger than i thought it was going to be: we spent over 5 hours there & still missed a couple things. We ate ice cream. I finally found a place that sells edible soft serve in NYC, but it's all the way down in Coney Island. Fie? We rode the train home together along with a club-footed pigeon. It was as unnerving as it was sad. I chased him off the train at one of the outdoor stations so that he wouldn't fall victim to man. The rest of the ride home i was thinking, So this is what i am... i, who have believed too much in words. *sigh*

Then on Sunday i was going to visit the Renegade Craft Fair which was on her subway stop, so we met up & explored it together. I was a little glad to be so poor, otherwise i would have ended up with SO many new T-shirts. But, i would have looked really fabulous. Currently in vogue: slugs, squirrels, owls, & French walruses. I had my first ever helado de coco. I had coco, Megan got lemon-lime which was wonderful in the heat. I met one of her roommates and a couple of her friends before she & i sat under the shade of a tree talking for a while. We watched a tent topple & charge toward a crowd of cell phone engrossed girls who didn't let go of their phones even as they screeched for their lives. Whatevah.

Megan walked me to the L train & i went to meet Laurie at her workplace. It's fancier than i'd pictured it. More gild, less card table than i'd been thinking. We took a cab downtown & met her dad for a Father's Day dinner. I love hanging out with the two of them. I might be generally interested in family members & how they relate to each other, but i especially like the dynamic between the two of them. Maybe i just like the dynamic between Laurie & anyone. Whatever the case, they made me smile a lot.

After dinner, we took a cab to Chelsea Pier land & hung out on the top of a top of a boat. There was a beautiful view of the water & unfortunately of Jersey. I called Mary while Laurie was using the bathroom to wish her a happy Father's Day & she replied, "Where are my steaks?" I had sent my mother a package from Omaha Steaks for Mother's Day, & Mary had said at the time, "I didn't see any avocados in that box" & i had promised her something for June. I don't know if it's arrived yet, but i sent her the first season of Monk.

So that brings me up to yesterday. Megan & i went to a free concert in Madison Square Park to see Me'Shell NdegéOcello. It seemed to be over really quickly, but the sounds were great. Voice & warble & drums: i felt like the music was trying to tell me something & i still have some of those rhythms in my wrist.
We walked from the park down to the Village & then into the East Village where we met the owners of a new Mac'n'Cheese place. They're serving $8 versions of the old favorite using expensive cheeses like brie or gruyere. Some cheeses i didn't even recognize. I'll check the place out after they open this weekend: it's very orange & that's a plus with me.
We walked in a circle around various Village sections & then walked up 2nd Ave from 6thish Street to 52nd. We stopped into the bakery & she met my girls & we loaded her up with cake.

It's really nice to have a new friend: someone who doesn't know me for my drama, can't judge me for my decisions because she doesn't know about them. I get to reveal my choice of my history. It's a relief from the Lang crowd. I'm leaning on this broken fence between past & present tense.

Tonight there's a free performance of All's Well That Ends Well in Central Park. It's a roving show, they move their set every 7-10 minutes to a new location, so the audience gets to run around the park with the actors. It sounds like fun! Enter Central Park West at 103rd at 7pm. If you want to meet me, send me a lame-ass text. I'm going to go to Target afterward & return/ exchange some shirts & probably play around with something squeaky.

out in the sun, megan
