colinraccoon and I took a couple of days off around the weekend. We went up to Tutukaka in Northland and stayed in
a holiday camp. We had a tourist cabin which was a bit expensive but quite new and well equipped. It would have slept 4-6 and had a kitchen and a bathroom with a big shower and it's own water cylinder.
We were visiting
orcakeiko and Ingrid from
Orca Research.org. We had a good few days relaxing, hanging out, and helping Terry with a little computer maintenance at the research base. Ingrid is building a new research base a little further up the coast, and we got to take a look around as they were pouring concrete. Definitely a worthy cause! Unfortunately the weather wasn't great, and although Orca were migrating through the area there were no local sightings and we didn't get out on the boat.
On the last day we took the scenic drive home, and stopped in
Opononi on the Hokianga Harbour to take some photos, click below for the gallery.
tutukaka07 The statue commemorates Opo the dolphin, who was a national obsession in the 1950's. There are also shots of YIFF with it's new 'Euro' (wide) plate. On the way home we drove down the Kauri Coast, named after the tree. The final shots are of the largest and oldest trees in New Zealand. The first two shots are of
Tāne Mahuta, over 50m (160') tall, and around 2000 years old. The last is of
Te Matua Ngahere, shorter but wider and thought to be even older.
