My auditions for In Death were last night and they were absolutely nerve wracking. The whole day I was so damn nervous and I have no idea why. My stomach was in knots and there was a deep, heavy burden in the pit of my chest. Watching people read for the parts was so hard and I don't know why. It was just hard to sit there and watch them read my stuff in front of everyone, thinking "Is this good or does it suck?" and "Oh man that line was lame." Stuff like that. But as the night went along, my cast became clear.
For the lead, Adam, I cast my friend Brent. He's a big taller and more built than I ever imagined Adam being, but damn he's good.
For Marko, Adam's slightly demonic spirit guide, I cast another buddy of mine, Nima. Nima is loud, boisterous, and charismatic. So is Marko. He's also bigger and older looking than Brent, which looks good on stage.
The role of Mary was a toss up for me, and I think I'm still unsure. But I think I'm going to cast a girl named Viveca. She's a petite blonde with a strong, mature voice, and during a particularly emotional scene, she shed tears. She looked and sounded great.
Jesus pops up in In Death, as a sort of guru (a-la Yoda). I've always had my Kenyan friend Daniel in mind for that role and last night he was perfect for it.
The rest of the roles were pretty easy to fill. I have three guys and a girl playing Adam's friends, a person volunteered to play a very intense role, and I had a wonderful actress show up with a headshot to read for the role of Adam's mother. The adult men who showed up didn't fit my needs for Adam's dad, but I know an actor who may do it. And for those of you who know Carolina, her scene at the very end is one that I can't wait to stage.
I'm going to get my music and sound together as soon as possible. I also need to build a coffin (how many times in your life do you get to say that?). I'm compiling a slideshow of local art, so let me know if you're interested in contributing to that. This is it. I've wanted to do this for so long and it's finally here.
