Atlantis is doomed unless something happens soon.heartnutAugust 2 2008, 13:41:58 UTC
Atlantis would be a great show if they had their own identity. I agree with you, kaballa. You hit it directly on the head.
I liked The Daedalus Project that aired last evening, but it was a little too much like an homage to Yesterday's Enterprise or Mirror, Mirror from Star Trek rolled into Dr. Who (which I have never seen, but it seems to fit). So, I guess it was that I liked the story ideas because they were familiar.
Star Trek is an outside look at our own culture through interspecies diplomacy, a social commentary that eliminates national identity and escapes regular barriers to pursuit of truth. Star Trek saved humanity through the learning experience.
Stargate SG-1 was (and still is) current commentary on our own nation's bureaucracy when faced with a top-secret world crisis. SG-1 saves human culture from destruction.
Stargate Atlantis was apparently conceived to be a bridge between SG-1 and Star Trek Voyager (VOY) as an isolated adventure in a new playing field--completely cut-off from our own reality. They were two successful shows (initially for VOY) that seemed to be a great match. If it had stayed there, it might have had a fighting chance. They killed it when they found that ZPM in the desert for the Daedalus to bring to Pegasus (and VOY similarly died when they could talk to home more often).
If only Atlantis could be cut off again from Earth. A crisis between the void of galaxies--destruction of the inter-galaxy bridge or loss of the ships--would create the initial scenario and give Atlantis a chance. Can't they learn from the mistakes that VOY made? VOY stitched up the Lost in Space scenario and look where it got them--horrible ratings and a lost fanbase that truly hated Enterprise (which could have been good if given a chance to grow).
A revamp like I just outlined could mean the end of the Shiny Heads Club (see icon), which would be very very sad. I like seeing these two actors interact because they are really great character actors. However, Caldwell could easily be stranded in the Pegasus Galaxy, couldn't he? Just one little rewrite, and Pileggi's still got a job. I confess that I enjoy watching Picardo--he really made The Doctor on VOY a great character--Spock, Data, Odo, and The Doctor were the characters that we all tuned in to see in the Trek shows. Where would they go next? I just hope that Picardo can truly integrate into Atlantis--make Woolsey into a lovable-hatable character with a real background. That's the key to making the switch from Sam to Woolsey as Atlantis Base Commander. Woolsey has to be a PERSON, not just the Base Commander who has no past.
I miss Carson, of course. Glad he's alive, but man, he needs to be back. Thank God somebody listened to the fans on that one. Keller's nice, but honestly, Carson is lovable. His history--his Mom, family, it's a connection to reality that we were hungry for, and it was so satisfying to get one more tidbit of that history everytime we saw him on screen. We thought we loved Daniel Jackson, but Carson loved US as his legacy.
0_o Wow, that turned into a huge rant. I'm putting it in my own journal, too.
