BJJ Learning: Finishing submission using kimura grip from back

May 01, 2015 23:22

The right way to attack when one has a secure kimura grip from the back either from bottom or top is not for one's body to go to the opponent's locked arm's side but to the opposite side to ensure one stays on top in solid control. This means that from turtle, one should not roll forward towards the arm one is attacking but actually back up and away from the arm while maintaining a good grip. (While the movement is counter-intuitive, the reasoning is quite sound. One wants to maintain top position with good pressure since the alternative ends in the opponent being on top, stacking, and eventually escaping.) Similarly, from the back, one should not kick one's leg over the opponent's head or fall to the side of the arm one is attacking for an armbar but instead fall away from the arm such that one can maintain good control of the grip and top position. In the event, one cannot finish an armbar or kimura, one still has mount.
