Clan Analogue presents Institute of Sound
Electronic arts collective Clan Analogue presents Institute of Sound, a
series of monthly electronic music production workshops, on Monday the 23rd
of February, 7pm, at Horse Bazaar, 397 Little Lonsdale St in the city. A
guest presenter examines an aspect of electronic music performance or
production, with demonstrations and a Q&A session followed by live
performances and opportunities for audience members to take part in hands-on
jamming.
This month Institute of Sound explores Computer Music & Software Sound
Synthesis. Much of today's music making is mediated by computer technology,
but computers have been put to musical use since the 1950s. In fact, some of
the earliest computer music was made in Australia using the CSIRO's CSIRAC
computer. Improviser and music software developer Ross Bencina
(audiomulch.com) takes us on a journey through computer music history. From
its conception through to contemporary practice, Ross will trace the
evolution of computer music and software sound synthesis from its early
beginnings on mainframe computers through to today's real-time laptop
performance software, with stops along the way in Melbourne, New Jersey,
Paris and San Jose. Focussing on techniques that are native to the computer
and have no analogue counterpart, Ross's discussion will include algorithmic
composition, live-coding, granular synthesis and automatic beat-slicing.
Examples of their use in contemporary music practice will be given.
Ross will give a performance demonstrating some of these techniques using
the soon-to-be released version 2.0 of AudioMulch software for electronic
music performance. Ross develops AudioMulch in Melbourne, and it is used by
thousands around the globe including recent visitors to our shores Girl Talk
and Fourtet. A hands-on AudioMulch 2.0 play session will be given after the
performance.
Entry to the workshop is free.
