...standing at the doorstep, about to step out into a new chapter of our lives. Behind us is our home, our sheltered childhood where things were certain and reliable. Ahead of us is the outside world, where we will emerge as adults into the real world, born for the first time. This year we are standing in the doorway, both worlds so close to us, so easy to grasp. As scary as it is, I want to see the world outside. I want to see it for myself, rather than through the windows of my parents' lives. Here we are on the threshold of something wonderful.
This year seems so final somehow. In years past, I've always thought, "Oh, there's always next year! I still have another year at home, in this school." But it just now hit me that this only comes once. Each year in our lives only comes once, and we don't get a second chance. In the eternal words of Seals and Crofts, "We may never pass this way again." It's bittersweet to know that we're starting to close this chapter of our lives, ready to start anew. Just remember what you mom always told you before going out:
"Take a sweater!"
Here's to all of us and new beginnings.
