intertidal zone
The intertidal zone is where the ocean meets the land, sometimes it is submerged and at other times exposed, as waves and tides come in and out. Because of this, the communities are constantly changing.
Animals
Usually only small animals live in the Intertidal Zone, like herbivorous snails, crabs, sea stars, and small fishes.
Plants
Algae and seaweed are usually the only plants.
Location
Intertidal Zones are basically all over the world. Where there is a shore line, there is probably an intertidal zone.
Estuaries
Estuaries are areas where freshwater streams or rivers merge with the ocean. The largest Estuary in the United States is the the Chesapeake Bay estuary.
Plants
Estuaries have plants such as seaweeds, marsh grasses, and mangrove trees (only in the tropics)
Animals
They have a variety of worms, oysters, crabs, and waterfowl.
Location
Estuaries are found on the coast where fresh water like a river or a bay has access to the ocean. Another example is when a river feeds directly into the ocean.
