Two hours sped by as the boys continued tweaking and adding more notes to Zack’s song, being so caught up in the music, not even really hearing the front door slam downstairs.
After a couple more minutes of fiddling with Zacky’s old guitar, Brian was the first to say something.
“Dude, I think someone is coming up to your room.”
Zacky jerked his head up suddenly.
“Huh? Oh yeah, its probably just Jade. She’s back from whatever the fuck she was doing and what she does every damn night…”
Brian frowned.
Jade never seemed to spend any time with her brother, which didn’t make much sense to Brian because Zack was pretty fucking cool if you asked him.
The door to Zack’s room suddenly swung open, and the oldest of the two Baker children stood in the doorway looking somewhat annoyed, and really high.
Her face changed in confusion when she saw Brian sitting on her brother’s bed, with a guitar in his lap and a pen in his hand.
“Brian?!? What are you doing here?? Matt was calling your house like a million fucking times trying to talk to you! Why the fuck are you in here??”
Brian shrugged.
“Your mom invited me over to chill with Zack.”
The girl folded her arms, and glared at Zack.
“Oh god, not again. Mom is STILL trying to pay boys to be friends with you? That is SO pathetic.”
Zacky didn’t say anything, and kept his eyes down on his fidgety hands.
Brian suddenly feeling annoyed with the girl for interrupting him, glared back at her, and jumped at the boys defense.
“No. I wanted to come. She didn’t say anything about paying me, and I’m not taking any money, so I have no idea what your talking about.”
He quickly glanced at Zack, who lifted his eyes enough to give Brian an almost smile, before he dropped his eyes again.
The older girl blinked in slight confusion, looking between the two boys before shrugging and taking her hair out of the tight ponytail she usually had in.
“Oh, anyways, Brian I have to tell you something! Its what Matt was trying to call you about. Its so awesome, your gonna be so excited. Come in my room so I can tell you, okay?”
Her long black hair swayed as she turned to go into her room right across from Zack’s, not waiting to hear the boys response.
Brian frowned.
“But, Im kinda hanging out with-”
Zack shook his head.
“No, its fine, Brian. Go ahead. She’s more your friend anyway.”
Brian stared at the younger boy.
“But, dude. I thought we were working on your song. Its starting to sound really awesome. Shouldn’t we work on it a little bit more?”
Zacky sighed, pulling the guitar strap over his head, and setting the cherry red instrument on the bed. He looked upset but there really wasn’t much Brian could do.
“It’s okay. I’m getting kinda tired of working on it anyway. We can do it another day, maybe. I’ll talk to you about it at school later.”
And with that, Zack folded up his music notebook and set it down on his desk, exchanging it for a guitar magazine instead, and opened it to show he was done talking about it.
Brian sighed slightly annoyed, but stood up anyway, and walked toward the door.
He paused, looking back at Zacky, who didn’t bother to look up from the pages of his magazine, and shrugged his shoulders, shaking his head, before closing the boys poster covered door.
At the sound of his door clicking shut, Zack finally looked up over his rather uninteresting choice of reading, and sighed, setting the magazine down on his desk.
He sat up on the edge of his bed, thinking about possibly going out and telling Brian he was sorry, and that he wanted to finish the song, but he was too afraid of what his sister might say to him, so he stayed in his room, reading over the lyrics that Brian had scratched on one of Zack’s notebooks, the words seeming like poetry to the younger boys eyes.
