I heard the bell on the door chime, and I could just hear my boss yelling my name from his office in the back room- “Brian, you take care of this customer…I’m busy.” -Porn-aholic pervert…
But nothing came.
Instead I hear cheery chatting, a higher, raspy voice is coming from the front of the store, and I hear my boss, his gruff, booming voice, saying something I can’t hear from where I’m sitting, but his obnoxious, barking laugh hits my ears, and I cringe slightly.
I keep my head down, trying to ignore the friendly conversation happening near the front of the store, and pretend to focus all of my attention to the beautiful, brand new guitar in my hands.
I’ve tuned it and polished it already until it sounds just as sexy as it looks, but I didn’t want to put it down, so basically all morning I have been fiddling around with this gorgeous hunk of wood, avoiding any of the other duties I’ve been assigned to do, because I’m just a lazy son-of-a-bitch.
I strum a few random chords just to give off the impression that I am in fact working, and I hear my boss walking towards me, the mystery person right behind him.
I just ignore them, and continue my song that I made up on the spot.
“Your really good.”
A voice behind me timidly states, and when I turn around, I practically swallow the gum I shouldn’t have been chewing.
My boss is smiling proudly, looking at me, his arms crossed over his large chest, his moustache looking tidier and trimmed nicer than usual, and standing next to him, face slightly tinged with pink, was the cutest boy I had ever seen in my life.
His face was naturally very pale, his skin a beautiful milky white, a look of almost cold porcelain, and not a single flaw or blemish evident that I could see with my eyes.
He had a shy little smirk on his perfect pink mouth, the pouty bottom lip adorned with two small silver rings, and a silver ring through his septum, as well.
He was sexy in an innocent, boyish way, and he had a sweet, shyness to him, that was not threatening in any way, even a little attractive, especially when he peered out from the black bangs that curtained in front of his eyes.
He was adorable, and I almost felt comfortable immediately being near him, but there was one thing that wasn’t sitting right with me.
Something about his eyes-those eyes…piercing green with a kiss of gold, and even a hint of blue around the pupil…just something about them was…unsettling.
They were by far the most beautiful pair of eyes I had ever had the privilege of seeing, it was just… I just couldn’t get out of my head that they weren’t human.
Like, they didn’t belong on his face-he looked too innocent and sweet to have such intense eyes-which added a few years to his young face.
They were distracting and terrifying, and I couldn’t stop staring into them, which caused the boy to blush even harder.
I decided to just let my slight, new obsession go, and smiled in what I was hoping to seem friendly.
I nodded my head, and set the instrument I had been playing to the side.
“Thanks, dude.”
I said, smirking at him that cocky smirk I had perfected over the years, and his face reddened even deeper in color.
My boss clasped him on the shoulder, and chuckled heartily.
“Yes, Brian here is one of our best workers, and he has been working loyally with us for over twelve years-isn’t that right, Brian?-it would be quite a shame if we ever had to let him go to something bigger and better than us…and not to mention, he’s one of the best guitarists in Orange County. So it would be double the loss…I know I would miss him!”
I snicker, patting my boss on his broad shoulder, and shake my head.
“Oh, George! You know I’d never leave you for something ‘bigger and better’! Your too good to me here! And besides, where am I going to find a sexier, and generous, and all around more brilliant boss than yourself? Hmm? I don’t think there is another one out there like you, and I don’t want to risk it, so your stuck with me…forever! But you better tell that wife of yours to watch it, because I don’t like sharing my sexy men with anyone.”
I gave him a wink, and laughed loudly at the look on his face.
He just shook his head, rolling his blue eyes, and glanced at the small man still standing patiently beside him.
“Did I mention he has a great sense of humor?? A little warped for my taste, but he’s got his father’s comedic brilliance…If you ever met his dad, you’d know what I was talking about!”
The pretty little stranger just smirked at me, eyeing me up, and cocked an eyebrow in curiosity.
“Is that so?”
I grinned back, nodding a little and held out my hand for him to shake.
“Sure is. That’s just a little known fact around here-I’m brilliant. Everybody knows that. I’m Brian and I’m brilliant. Nice to meet you.”
He shook my hand, grinning, amusement playing across his face, and bit at one of his lip rings.
I felt a slight chill flow through me as soon as I touched his skin, his hands feeling colder than room temperature, and it startled me a little, but I didn’t let it show.
My boss looked at us and smacked himself playfully on the forehead, shaking his head at his own stupidity.
“Where is my professional position?? I am very sorry…Brian. I want to introduce you to your new employee-he was just transferred from L.A., the store he was working at is being bought out by a bigger company, and he chose to stay in the guitar making/building/fixing field, so they transferred him to us. He’s a great worker, and he knows more about guitars than most people I know! Besides you of course, Brian-but, I was thinking maybe you could teach him a few of your tricks and show him around a bit. Maybe let him shadow you, until he gets a feel for the place, and starts up his own routine. Sound good, Bri? I’ll double your pay for the day just for helping me out, okay?”
I smiled, warmly this time, and turned back to look at the new addition to our small business.
He looked back at me, his eyes looking darker than they had earlier, almost slightly brown, and I had to force myself to not look directly at his irises.
“Of course, Georgie! You can always count on me! And, lets start over again, alright? A little more maturely this time, okay? Hi. Brian Haner. Nice to meet you, bro. It’s great to have a fellow guitar nerd to talk to-someone who actually knows their shit, and can actually play a fucking guitar-cause God knows all the bull-shitters here who only claim they know what they are talking about…”
My boss cleared his throat, and gave me a ’slow down’ look, before patting the new guy’s small shoulder.
“Don’t mind this one. He’s just a little…passionate about his work. No mistakes get past him, and he’s very serious about what he does. Which is good. Because, although we love Mr. Haner’s twisted sense of humor, there’s only so much we can allow in the work place. And Brian knows that. Dontcha’, Bri?”
I nodded my head, and bit my bottom lip.
The mystery boy nodded his head as well, still studying me with his soul piercing bright eyes.
“Me too. I’m not one to screw around when I’m doing my job. You don’t have to worry about anything like that with me, sir. I will be all professional and extremely serious, and passionate when dealing with my work. Please don’t feel as if you need to teach me anything. I’ve already learned everything I need to know. If you ask me, I’m more than qualified to assist you with any task you may need done-large or small-so, I believe you chose well by hiring me, sir. I won’t let you down. I am completely and entirely reliable. You can count on me, sir.”
I raised an eyebrow way up, and cocked my head to the side.
I’ve never seen anyone shamelessly kiss someone’s ass as bad as this guy had just done for my boss.
Why he had done it was a mystery, and it kinda pissed me off how bad he was trying to please George.
I think it sort of floored George as well, because he looked at the boy as if he had grown an extra head, and he slowly nodded, still looking as if he hadn’t understood a word the guy had spoken.
“Alright , very good then…Uh, Brian? He’s all yours now. Try not to freak him out too much with your crazy mind, alright? We need this one. Got it, Haner? Good. Now, get to know each other, boys. You two are going to be working a lot together these coming months. I need you guys to get along. Alright? Okay, I’m gonna leave you alone now. You need anything, you give me a yell. I’ll just be in my office doing some, um, paperwork. Later, gentlemen.”
With that, George turned to go to his office near the front of the store, and me in the new guy were left staring at each other.
I paused, studying him a little longer, before extending my hand to him for the second time.
“I’m sorry.”
I said, trying to seem friendly, despite the fact this guy kinda gave me the creeps.
“I didn’t catch your name.”
He smiled back at me, his lips snaking up into a tight smirk, and took my hand tightly in his once again.
I was chilled to the bone almost instantly, but I kept my composure, holding his hard gaze.
“Zack. Zack Baker. Nice to meet you, Brian Haner.”
