Castle Season 2 Finale: Thoughts from the Bunker of Rationality

*peers out from the Bunker of Rationality, which is reinforced against nuclear strikes/rabid fans*

I had some thoughts about the season 2 finale and I wanted to discuss it with sane people. Are you guys out there? :-)   Had a ridiculous amount of thoughts, actually. Aside from "Stana Katic broke my heart with her acting skillz"-I think we can all ( Read more... )

How much room is there in that bunker?

You make some excellent points, n-l, in terms of timing of the added episodes, the quality of the story line, and the difference between the wit of the show over all and the farce evident in "Wrapped up in Death," and certain other episodes.

Stana Katic has been outstanding in her projection of a spectrum of emotion. She seems to have amazing insight into her character - most off in WUID, when I have a hard time seeing Beckett overtly mocking/toying with Castle by rigging the coffee machine and sabotaging a chair.

Conversely, either Nathan Fillion, or the Castle writers, let the character of Castle down at several points late this season, notably in TLS, when without regard for what previously appeared to be insightful and genuine feeling for Beckett, he not only slept (repeatedly) with a casual acquaintance, but spoke lightly of it to Beckett. Hello. (Again, Stana's portrayal of that moment was priceless.) Castle's inability to read the Beckett's desire to say something of import to him, pulling him out of the party to speak to him alone, and to be so oblivious as to expect her to continue her remarks when his arm was wrapped around Gina, seemed completely out of character.

That being said, clearly the writers want to set us up for continued disconnect as Beckett and Castle spar and spark next year. Since the writing along with the acting, have created a dramedy we've enjoyed so much over the past year +, I'm inclined to hope for the best, and to trust that they'll continue to entertain us in season three, in episodes such as the one with Johnny Vonn, with the heart-wrenching saving of Castle as it's closing action. Can't wait to see how they manage to weasel Castle back into the bull pen next year, with the entire team knowing how he hurt their Beckett...

Thanks for your thoughts from the bunker...

Plenty of room! Come on in. :-)

I can't fault Stana for anything, even for "Wrapped Up in Death"; she had to play what was written. She's really grown into her character. As for Nathan, I wondered about his understanding of Castle's nature not so much in his involvement with Ellie, although that was eyeroll-worthy and I thought Beckett handled it well; it was when he acted that goodbye scene with Ellie. I read a lot of divided analysis by fans over that one. Even adding a subtle undertone of ruefulness or pain would have elevated my opinion of Castle, and that would have informed the later arc of Castle's rivalry with Demming (which I thought Nathan played quite well; I've no complaints there).

Agreed about the writers setting up conflict for next season. I am looking forward to season 3 and for the most part I trust the writers. Think they got fatigued in these last few eps-going from a 13-episode season to a 22-ep and then a 24-ep season must be tiring.

"... without regard for what previously appeared to be insightful and genuine feeling for Beckett, he not only slept (repeatedly) with a casual acquaintance, but spoke lightly of it to Beckett."

Don't forget that he spoke equally lightly of sleeping with his interior decorator (although we don't know WHEN that happened) AND his first ex-wife in Season 1. Admittedly, he didn't know Beckett as well then, but his fling with the actress speaks more to his not having changed much than anything else.

(And I think that statement works better if you apply awake-person grammar to it, a feat of which I am currently incapable...)

Awake-person grammar? Hmm. I'm going to remember that. I'm often awake but occasionally sleep deprived...why sometimes I can't even manage speech much less grammar.

And as to the question of Castle being sleep deprived with a variety of women (why DO we refer to it as "sleeping" together, when we really mean they were not sleeping at all?) and then speaking lightly of it, perhaps what I really wished by this point in Castle/Beckett time was that Castle HAD changed, at least in his interest in other woman. Beckett's face after the exchange in The Late Shaft about the "just got laid" voice was so heart wrenching. It seemed she was caught off guard with C's casual sex admission. The danger here, for me, is applying a morality or sensibility most of Hollywood (the country?) probably doesn't share.

Anyway, admittedly, Castle speaks of getting laid by lonely moms he meets in the park (wow! Don't remember that happening at any of the parks I went to with my kids!) his interior decorator, Meredith ... Am I missing anyone? The only person he claimed to have a sexless relationship with was - Oh! - GINA! Does that give us any clues as to where the writers will take the trip to the Hamptons to? (Speaking of awkward speech.)

See? We're intrigued with where September will take Beckett and Castle! The writers have succeeded!

I hear you on the morality thing, man. I still love Castle despite our very different values, but part of that is that I keep thinking he's got to be more mature than the show depicts him to be.

Castle says he met women at the park and and at the museum, but IIRC we never got a definitive answer as to whether he actually did sleep with any of them. I prefer to think that he didn't, for Alexis' sake. :-P Whether he did or not, he deliberately implied that he did. Which gives further credence to why he and Gina won't be hooking up this summer, because as you said she's the only person with whom he's had a mostly sexless relationship; something had to have gone seriously wrong there.

I feel like I was going to make more of a point here, but I'm a little sleep-deprived as well. I hope my grammar is up to par. :-D
