Ways you can help:

Humane Society of the United States

They have an emergency relief fund set up specifically for Hurricane Katrina victims. Money will go towards search and rescue, health care and rehabilitation/shelter for animals of all persuasions caught up in this tragedy.

The Salvation Army
Online donations can be made to the relief effort. They are asking that no in-kind donations be made at this time. Donations of food or clothing should be taken to your local center, for distribution in your own local community. They can always use whatever you can give.

Other ways you can help:
-Please, don't clog the phone lines. Let emergency workers do their job, and allow them first dibs. Most areas have no phone service anyway. As with the California earthquakes and the Indonesian tsunamis, websites are being formed to help folks who get to aid stations check in and let loved ones outside of the hurricane zone know they are okay. Witchvox.com is one such site that is working to help folks touch base.

-Never underestimate the power of ritual and prayer. Whatever religious persuasion or belief system you practice, now is the opportunity to perform an act of benevolence for those souls, be they human or animal, in their hours of greatest need.  I would like to invite everyone to take some time tonight, 9pm eastern/8pm central, to pray or perform a healing rite of your choosing to help those you may be too far away to save by hand. Reiki practitioners, now is the time to send all the loving energy we can! Surround the suffering with light.
