Back in 2015 I used part of my tax refund to buy a couple of drop spindles and roving. I bought a spindle with a stone whorl that's approximately 2" in diameter, and one with an acrylic whorl that's approximately 4 1/2" across that I've been using for plying. So much better than the old plastic one I started out with several years ago. I also bought roving, a lovely 60% polwarth wool and 40% silk blend in a coloway called Volcano.
https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1005620983 Here's some pictures of me plying the first skein of 208 yards. I decided to chain ply the singles to preserve the color progression. I still have plenty to go. And, yes, that's toilet paper tubes I'm using as bobbins. :P
I ended up with 208 yards of fingering weight for the first skein. I'm working on plying the second skein now, and will still have plenty to go.
I definitely want to knit a shawl from it, but I can't decide which one. I'd love to do a clapotis, but I think this might be too lightweight. There are a couple of others I have in mind, but haven't decided yet. I sitll have plenty of time.
Here are the singles I'm going to chain ply into the second skein.
I also bought a couple of pounds of undyed Romney top to spin enough to knit a messenger bag. I want to dye it in various blues and greens to suggest water, and attach sea creatures to it. Felt the whole thing. I have a pattern in mind off of Ravelry. I have several hundred yards plyed so far, but had to take a break from it because the pretty colors of Volcano were calling to me. Plus, it drafts like a dream. ::le sigh::
