Day 09 - Your beliefs
This should be difficult. Herm.
I believe absolutely in equality. Marriage is no longer a solely religious function and, in belonging to the state, it deserves equality. Voting, standing in the workplace, medical matters. I believe that no person is better than any other person. In telling someone- a stranger, your neighbor, your friend- that they are deserving of less rights than you, that they do not stand on equal ground, you are essentially telling them that they are less of a human being, and that is in no way, shape, or form any sort of okay.
I believe that my body is my body and it is my choice what I do with it. I don't much care whether you think God will condemn someone for aborting their fetus. The fact is, it is a tiny part of your body, existing because it is taking from you. It is a parasite, essentially; please excuse the negative connotations. It is taking from your life force, from your daily life, from your well-being; you carry it around, inside you, for roughly nine months. No one, nobody, can force you to do that. But if you feel you are suited for the job of motherhood, yay! My congratulations and appreciation.
On that note, I believe your life (and I mean your life essence, your ticking heart here) is yours to do what you will with. If you want to live, I'm glad for you. I extend my hand in a congratulatory handshake and will clap for you all the way through. But if you are monumentally unhappy in life, if you feel you want to end your suffering, I firmly believe that is your choice. I don't care if it's because your life is a hellish place or because you have terminal cancer or any other disease. It's your choice. And, if you are lying prone in a hospital bed, in agony without reprieve except from morphine, physically unable to end your own life, I feel that, should a doctor be willing to help you end your suffering, that is your choice, too. "Do no harm" absolutely applies if keeping them alive without any quality of living is really only causing harm.
I believe that Buddhism should be allowed to thrive and exist, without being crushed by the Chinese. I believe there are some things that are sacred, and religion is that. I don't have a religion, but I respect them. I absolutely without doubt respect Buddhism and the Dalai Lama is a brave and good man.
I believe there are far too many children without homes or families in the world for people to spend thousands, collectively billions, of dollars on fertilization. Every child is deserving of love.
I believe that you owe nothing to anyone, society or government. However, I believe that you should spread kindness, should pass on good fortune. Improve the lives of your fellow human beings. You have to make that choice.
I believe in the respect of human life. What is yours is yours to take, but taking any other life is wrong. Hence, the death penalty? Not okay. I don't care how you justify it to yourself; you have killed, by your hand or facilitation, another human being. You are never just in doing so. If it's self defense, say, I may understand. But you did take a life and you have to live with it. It's not okay; it's merely understandable.
I could go on for days with what I believe and never hit the end of it.
