As the Czech proverb goes
Kolik jazyků znáš, tolikrát jsi člověkem
The literal translation
How many tongues you know, how many times you are human.
The meaning-based translation
You live a new life for every new language you speak.
If you know only one language, you live only once.
Don't you think it's true? We even kind of ''studied'' this in psychology.
When you speak a different language, your whole world view kind of shifts a little.
It might be a subtle shift, a not-so-subtle shift, but definitely a shift.
And this gives rise to a myriad of different living experiences.
Sometimes I feel happier in my Mando-speaking Mando-shows-watching world, sometimes I watch Japanese dramas in Chinese subtitles instead of English ones, and it's all quite abit different from engaging in English conversation or watching English language programmes.
But all the philosophical and more intellectual exchange, be it in reading, writing, speaking or thinking, is in English.
Ideally, I want to be able to understand all the languages of this world, but seeing that it's impossible, then I aim to master as many as possible.
And unfortunately, as Japanese gets tougher, the less motivated I become. I haven't even mastered all the node and nonis how to take JLPT3 like that??? How to EVER reach JLPT1 like that?? hahahhaa.
