What does Naruto want? You only have to ask.

“To become Hokage!” The young boy shouts at the top of his lungs. The small group of enemy ninjas readies their weapons and jutsus, but they don’t have any idea what’s behind the seemingly innocuous child. His hands cross in front of him, “Kage Bunshin No Jutsu!” A cloud of smoke engulfs him and the ninjas.

The small group of Ninja’s from the Village of Sound were on a simple reconnaissance mission, but they had no idea one of the Leaf’s stupid peons would be training this far out. The smoke seems to hang for a moment as the 5 ninjas wait for the first move. The smoke slowly clears to show the young ninja halted his attack because his jutsu did nothing. The leader of the group steps up, “Well that was pathetic. You leaf are all the same, all show, no go. I, Okami, will rip you apart.” He charged with a kunai leading his charge in a flash he lost sight of Naruto and could only see sky, and his jaw hurt.

There were two Naruto, one was still standing watching the other Naruto throwing an upward angle side kick from low on the ground. Another two seemed to appear form no where. Okami was hit again from the left with another launching kick, from the right an upper-cut. The first Naruto used the second Naruto as a launching pad, getting air. He passed Okami in the air. With a swift axe kick, Naruto drove his heel into the skull of Okami. Okami was sent head first into the ground, instantly out cold. Naruto landed on the ground as the rest turned to face the four Sound Ninjas.

What does Naruto want? To be accepted.

The young boy was crying, very loudly. People on the street seemed to pass him by, not giving him a second glance. Or maybe too short of one, he’d heard the hushed whispers, but still didn’t know what they meant.

“There he is.”
“It’s that kid.”
“What is he still doing here?”
“We should get rid of him.”

An older man stopped in front of the crying child, “Naruto, what’s wrong?” He said as he stooped to speak to Naruto.

Naruto choked back tears trying to get his complaint out. “I…stubbed…my…my…toe!!!” A loud wail was elicited after this statement, punctuating the urgency.

The old man winced and patted the young man on the shoulder, “Easy, Naruto, Easy. There, there, it’s ok. Your toe will be just fine. The Hokage is here.” Hokage-sensei picked up Naruto and carried him to his house. There he retrieved his medical supplies and patched up the minor cut. The crying winded down to sniffles as the pain subsided.

“All better. That work for you, Naruto?” The Hokage patted Naruto on the leg. Naruto nodded in response.

“You’re growing up so fast. It seemed like only yesterday you were walking around in diapers.”

“You knew me when I was that old?” Naruto inquired, “Then, do you know what happened to my parents?”

The Hokage seemed to freeze in his stride. He’d known this question would come, he’d just hoped it would have come later, much later, like never.

“Naruto, do you remember the story of the Nine-tailed Demon fox?” The Hokage walked over to his smoking pipe and got it ready for his evening smoke.

“Of course! The Leaf was being ravaged by a demon fox with Nine-tails. Making it the most powerful of animal demons and one of the last.”

“You had just been born, and your parents joined the fray with the Fourth Hokage.”

“He sacrificed himself and defeated the fox.” Naruto piped up with a smile.

“Very good, but he wasn’t the only one who did so.” The Third Hokage took a long drag from his smoking pipe. “Your parents lost their lives like Iruka did. Your teacher at the academy.”

Naruto grew silent, letting the words sink in. “But who took care of me?”

Hokage smiled broadly, “Me, of course. As well as some others who I enlisted. You lived here for quite some time. You remember. I gave you your own apartment because you asked.”

“Yea, I remember. To a point.” The clock on the wall rang the night hour. “Hokage, can I sleep here tonight? It’s terribly late and I don’t think you have to walk me home.”

The Hokage smiled to himself. “Of course, Naruto. You’re more than welcome.” The Hokage walked to his door and told the guard on duty to get some bed linens. He turned around to find Naruto already asleep, drooling.

Hokage walked over and ran his hand through the young boy’s hair. “Some day, I’ll be honest with you, Naruto.”
