There's two types of mainstream, popular music - the type that is made by producers and engineers to specifically construct a pop hit. Then there's the type where the musicians themselves are just really, really good. That's the case with AFI and My Chemical Romance. I learned a while ago that good music doesn't have to be underground (most of that sucks too), it just needs to come from talented musicians. Once I got past the stereotypes associated with, say, MCR (little fangirls and emo music), I found that they are really fucking good. Also try Muse and Mew and the Killers.
check these albums out, you won't be disappointed. AFI - Decemberunderground My Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black Parade Muse - Black Holes and Revelations Killers - Sam's Town Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites
I've also found that most people that don't like music made by actual musicians tend to like really shitty music, usually repetetive dance music with female vocals singing about nothing in particular, or one lyric over and over again about touching or dancing or ipods. Which is good when you're an idiot or a small child, I guess.
