Questions I still have smallsotong March 22 2017, 02:43:24 UTC
1. Why was Gen rubbing his ear??

2. What does the knife-buyer see in Kamet's face?

3. “Remember Immakuk. Pay the fastener” - who's the fastener? What even is a fastener?

4. What exactly was the purpose of the war galleys + arresting Costis and Kamet? Was it protecting Kamet from assassination? Or was it more to do with potential instability from the news of the miscarriage? I wasn't sure.

(1) I noticed the ear thing too. What was up with that? Was he nervous? Embarrassed?

(2) The weapon seller was trying to haggle, right? I think Kamet put on his "scary face" to quote your icon. XD Thus, the merchant decided not to mess with him and gave him a fair price.

(3) Hardware? XD I missed this. Where was that? I would assume it's a reference to one of the stories. I need to go back over the myths. I tend to blaze through them on the first read and not understand their significance till much later.

(4) I've re-read this one several times... I'm still confused about it. I would assume it was intended to disguise their arrival and protect them, but they arrived on an ordinary ship with a flag that only Costis and a few other people understood the significance of. Wouldn't it just draw unnecessary attention to them? I'm missing something, I think.

(3) is the prophecy that Costis receives. He is also confused by it.

(4) And when Costis gets all huffy about it, Teleus says "Think, you idiot" <- which means Costis should be able to figure this out?

(I took a bunch of notes in anticipation of giving away my arc, which is why I have all these random things on hand)

edit: Now I can't stop thinking of the squid as Kamet's scary-face! XD

I re-read it as well, and I agree that the operation was mostly for obscuring Kamet and Costis' arrival, but I still don't 100% understand why it was done in the way it was ( ... )

Stop poking people in the chest, Costis! Especially, scary Attolian captains. Hehe... Righteous indignant Costis is the best! Also, part of the reason he's angry is he's trying to protect Kamet and take the blame, which is just so him ( ... )

2) Gen was rubbing his ear because he's visited the kitchens the night before to confess that he's been the boot boy (and had his ear pinched by the cook! If I remember right--I think he appeared in the kitchen before the news was announced at court at who he was, right? If so, he was being considerate by telling them himself.

3) I watched out for that fastener bit. It had to have been when Costis gave all their money to that one person who helped them (it escapes me now what that person's profession was, but it seemed related to "fastening" something....).

(2) Gosh, this book is making me feel stupid. That's totally it. He'd already talked to the kitchens at that point and gotten his ears boxed!

(3) I'm sorry. I still can't find this part. Do you have the page number?

(2) OMG YES and that's hilarious and I completely missed it and I'm glad I gave you the ARC.

(3) When you do give the page number, also describe the scene because I no longer have the book :)

I think I figured this out thanks to frosted_feather's insight. So the prophecy is, Remember Immakuk. Pay the fastener.

Godekker--it's a decorative cord that fastens a scroll. -p249

So, Goedekker is the fastener, which is why Costis gives him all their money.

Immakuk is Kamet like Ennikar is Cosits. Ennikar/Costis suffers from a fever, and Immakuk/Kamet saves him from the Queen of the Night/Death. So after he is rescued from a fever by his Immakuk (Kamet), he is suppose to pay the fastener (Godekker).

Hmm, Now I'm re-thinking this. I was thinking Goedekker was the "fastener" when Costis paid him all their money, after they had already promised to pay him. But I can't remember why I thought he would count as a "fastener". The other alternative is the slave who fixed Costis' sandle, whom Kamet helped, and then he warned them about pursuers. But I don't think they paid him anything. Now I need to reread it!

Eureka! I think we've figured it out together!

Awesome! I thought I had a reason for thinking Godekker, but of course forgot. Thanks for figuring it out!

3. "Pay the fastener". The fastener is Godekker, named for the strong used to fasten a scroll. I recognized that right away, and felt satisfied when Costis gave him all their money.

Nah, I'd never heard the word before, but Kamet tells us what it is and notes how crummy it must be to be named after such a lowly object.
