Has anyone else figured out why Costis didn't die in the well? I about squealed when it dawned on me.

It was full of flour, right? The dog also broke his fall?

He did land on the dog, but I think the reason that happened goes back to "Know that you will never die of a fall unless the god himself drops you."

!!! I forgot about that line.

But does that mean... Eugenides the god has some influence in Medea?

That's my interpretation. It's hard to quantify what kind of influence that is (I don't really think there are hard-and-fast rules!) But it makes sense to me that this kind of spiritual power could extend to a devoted worshipper endangered by something in the god's direct sphere of influence.

After all, as Gen points out, Eugenides isn't exactly drowning in devotions. So while I think it's more doubtful that Eugenides could/would have saved Costis from the illness or a sword wound, falling is his exact purview. Eugenides might have more of a say where that is concerned, no matter where in the world his servant happened to be.

Also, Thank you, Eugenides-the-god. On behalf of everyone, I think!

Do you think Costis has realized? I imagine he would have been unnerved, and we don't really see that, but he DOES have plenty of time at the bottom of the well to understand and calm down/accept it before Kamet finally shows up and there are other things to think about.

OOH, and the miller calls them both thieves when he shows up again!

I think it is what Inkasrain says.

Also when Kamet falls down the mountain and calls up to Costis that he's fine and Costis answers "Of course" on page 192 I interpreted that as Costis believing in Gen's God and Gen's word that those serving his God will never die in a fall. I think Costis doesn't know (or maybe can't comprehend) that Kamet is not on a journey to go serve the King in Attolia.
