I guess this what you call high concept indie. Rian Johnson’s film transposes a hard boiled, old school noir to a contemporary high school. The gumshoe, the damsel in distress, the femme fatale, the heavy, the king pin: they are all there. Everyone speaks in a thick, outmoded slang. This was one of the best films I've seen in a long time, and I'm really looking forward to the region 2 DVD release.

(The bit with the pin's mom) It is a bit too jokey and jars the viewer.

Really? I liked the comic relief, it takes you out of the mindframe of film noir so when something horrendous happens you just shake your head and exclaim 'Holy shit!'

I guess that's what I didn't like about. Like the fact The Pin and Tug's gangs wore the same. It seemed to belong in a different film.

Mm, you have a point. I liked it for the same reason you disliked it, I suppose, beause being reminded that, after all, these were just high school kids in very serious (adult) situations took it to another level for me.

I actually both howled wit laughter AND fouind it jarring - I think the director loved the contrast and trusted his actors to stay in character.
