Я:
Dear Sirs,
I would like to reply on your letter and express my opinion in writing.
My daughter Varvara Uskova is visiting teacher Natalie's class.

Also I like the whole idea of wearing uniform at school I am not happy with that uniform at all. My reasons are:
1. I don't want my four years old daughter to wear black and grey all the time. I am pretty sure that is not good for six years old children as well - also it can be probably better for teenagers.
It can be a good idea to provide different colors of T-shirts. Most young children prefer to wear red and yellow, green and light bleu, so shouldn't we allow them to wear different colors?
Also I think that you don't have to be so strict about wearing necessarily black skirts and trousers. At least for kindergarden and primary school, they can be different colors as well.

2. This uniform it is too expensive. Three T-shirts are not enough for small children (or you have to wash every day) so parents have to buy at least five or six, that makes more than two thousand already. Parents will also have to buy black trousers and skirts, that makes even more money. And still I am pretty sure my daughter won't wear it.
To me the uniform is also not comfortable for pre-school children who move a lot.

I have talked to a lot of other parents, most of them agree with me.

Hope you can find a way to deal with these reasons.

Feel free to contact me on 08-0490-2313.

Dear Nina,
Thank you for your email and constructive feedback.

By law in Thailand any school including international schools have to have a uniform. Under the military regime these things are being enforced. We have no choice but to introduce the uniforms across the whole school. However we introduced the most minimal  uniform possible not to be a burden on parents.
Further by only recurring one uniform item we still allow parents and children the freedom of how to dress their children within the limit that it must be black. The same freedom applies to shoes.
Regarding the color - colors have significance in Thailand such as red and yellow and shades they are. Black is not acceptable as it is too hot and white becomes dirty too easily and certain colors are associated with genders such a as pink or blue. Therefore choice is limited and the ministry's stated purpose of the uniform is to make children look smart and well presented - dignified. From the limited choices we had we considered this to be the best compromise as it is 1) smart and business like and dignified 2) difficult to get dirty 3) not gender specific 4) not political 5) practical as the grey does not observe heat.
If clothing is an issue due to the sensitivity of the child the parents can choose to buy their own chosen polo shirt in the same color and we will provide with the school's registered emblems in accordance with the ministry for the same price as the price of the uniforms. For this purpose we have prepared iron on emblems. But the uniforms are fine. Cotton needs to be washed once in order to be soft and nice. And if you want it softer you can add fabric softener to the wash. All factory exit cloth is stiff due to processing.
If some parents will still find our uniform too big of an issue to the point that they are ready to give their child an emotional damage by changing the school, teacher and friends over the uniform, then unfortunately we can not do anything to change that. They are free to give us one month notice.
I would like to add that we are not the only school that complies with the law and those parents might find in the future that any more or less serious and reliable school does comply with the law and has the uniform.
Please feel free to contact me at anytime for further questions.

Dear Mr Temple,

we would like to inform you about our position considering school uniform.

Although we agree with the whole idea of wearing a uniform at school we can not accept this uniform you have suggested to use because it is really bad.

Thank you for meeting our interests and allowing to wear navy blue skirts, shorts and trousers. That is already much better then all black, and we think now it is possible to deal with.

There are also some things to discuss about these polo T-shirts.

First, they are evidently sinthetic whatever is written on them. The threads do not burn but fuse.  The fabric eventually pills after washing and children’s skin can not breath in it. The logos are too hard and all the children are scratching. They are also too hot for kindergarden children who don’t stay in a room for and spend a lot of time outside - so they will all get wet and get a cold after coming back inside.

We have looked at a lot of shores but we couldn’t find small sizes of cotton polo T-shirts of the same color in Phuket. Cotton T-shirts are available of all the colors but grey. Actually the reason is that most children don’t like grey color and so nobody sews and sells children T-shirts in grey color.

We are also not ready to pay for putting a logo at a T-shirt the same price as for the whole T-shirt as Ms Suchner suggested us to do.

We would like to suggest you to replace wearing a uniform for a dress code at least for pre-school children. That dress code can consist on blue navy skirts, shorts or trousers and a cotton polo T-shirt of any color or some colors, but not just grey and black. It is also possible to put a small school logo on them but for a reasonable price.

If dress code is not exeptable please provide us with a good quality uniforms.

Hope we can find a way out of this situation.
