Am I the only one totally confused by the Thai protesters, The People's Alliance for Democracy?

As far as I understand it, these are businessmen, academics, and other middle- to upper-class people who are royalists and want the country to have less voting rights, especially the rural poor. Okay, fine, rich people want to keep the power, same old story.

But their tactics are those generally employed by the disenfranchised poor to destabilize a country - surrounding or hijacking government buildings, trapping the legislators inside, and throwing tear gas and rocks at the police over homemade barricades of tires and barbed wire, closing down the airports and the rail system.

All these things interrupt capitalism. They drive tourists away, and have caused the Thai stock market to plummet. So, the rich are making themselves less rich, all to make the rural poor have less power? That doesn't make any sense to me. What am I missing?
