It was very derivative, wasn't it?

Very. I do like that no one's quite slobbering over the Doctor yet, but otherwise, it's not far off an RTD story at all. Still, I particularly felt they were getting too close to "The End of the World" - which was a far superior episode, IMO, with a lot of emotional resonance and a more interesting story, a cute take on a drawing room mystery. I'll take Cassandra over "Liz X" anytime.

Yeah, Moffat's characters are often wind-up toys. I loved Nancy from the beginning, and Carey Mulligan made me love Sally, even though when you think about it, she wasn't anything special, and I kind of love Rory already. Larry was a total nothing, Reinette was a plank of formica (to be fair, Sophia Myles is one of the worst actresses working, wo it might not have been all Moffat's fault). I didn't like Jack at first, but he did have a personality, so I'll give one to Barrowman there - I did think he picked up significantly when he was with both the Doctor and Rose. I'll admit, part of me was ticked off that Rose seemed to be taken in by him so completely when I saw him as insincere from the first moment. I was half-convinced she was just playing him, simply because I didn't want her to be so stupid.

Just thinking about how much deeper and richer the characters were in S1 *sigh*. I would say it's always been about the actors, but then I think Billie went backward in S2 after about the Cybermen episode. Maybe she became a pod-actress, sucked in by what I see as a lot of laziness and smuggery.

All that said, if Moffat can just give me entertainment that I can enjoy without wanting to either spork my eyeballs or cut the Doctor's hearts out with a spoon, then it'll be an improvement! (That's dramatic hyperbole, of course… maybe!)
