The pain got ahead of me yesterday. Had first round of PT since since the abdominal sugery late yesterday afternoon after a long and delightful nap. Didn't time the meds very well and realized as I sat up after PT with agonizing stabs of pain that it had been more than 4 hours. About 4 hrs and 36 minutes, in fact. Spent the rest of the evening suffering. Back ahead of the pain today but just barely, and noticed that I'm getting low and had to call for a refill. Happened to call right around noon and got the answering service who left a message and said someone would call me right back. It's just a rx refill, super easy, right? Waited till almost 4pm and still hadn't heard back so called the Dr office and nope, they still hadn't gotten "to the bottom of the pile" of notes for callbacks. Not gonna have the rx refill till tomorrow but that'll be fine, not that low and not taking the full prescribed dose more than half the day now.
It occurs to me that what we call "pain killers" don't kill pain at all, they just soften it a little, blur the edges till it isn't all-consuming. It's still there, lurking under the fuzzy grogginess, waiting for a wrong move or missed dose to wake it up like a kraken called forth to bring misery and sadz. Pain-blurrers? Pain-softeners? Pain-diffusers?
Didn't get an afternoon nap in an somehow ended up staying awake for more than 9 hours today. That's a new post-hospital record.
