Disaster Help

May 16, 2008 07:42

There are so many disasters in the world, as there always seem to be.

Cyclone in Burma: 43,000 dead, 28,000 missing, death toll expected to rise to 100,000.
Earthquake in China: 20,000 dead, expected to rise to 50,000.

Not to mention all the ongoing humanitarian crises across the world.

And frustratingly, so little we can do to help, safe in our Western society, distanced from the pain and suffering. Times like this I want to go an volunteer to help with aid agencies, or VSO, or something similar. Maybe I will.

In the meantime, all I can do is donate money. It's not like I can't do without it - so many people will benefit from any donation so much more than I ever will. What am I missing out on? Some new clothes, some fancy food, some books or DVDs? These are beyond irrelevant when so many people are dying for lack of support and money.

If you're British, you can donate through the Disasters Emergency Committee to their current appeal for Burma. Here's hoping the Burmese government see sense and accept help, and start helping the poor and rural areas, instead of just fixing the capital and keeping everyone out of the other areas with army checkpoints so no-one can see the dead and the dying as their government ignore them.
