[ Concert Diary 07]

Ribadee Players
Blackfriars

G and I went over to Blackfriars a week past on Sunday (forgot to post it at the time, and I'm catching up on my concert diary listings at the moment). We went to see a jazz group called the Ribadee Players (named from a sketch by the comedian Lord Buckley (and no, I don't know who he is either)). This was pretty straight ahead jazz - good players certainly. While Blackfriars almost always has some live music on, and usually jazz at that, we had heard of this gig through Matt at Big Band, who was rehearsing with a group he's in and the trumpet player from this group (the Ribadee Players) had wandered in to speak to the drummer of the group that was rehearsing. Anyway, as usual, music is all about connections. They were quite good ant any rate, although we couldn't hear so well from where we were sitting. We had a good night listening and talking (well, mostly G talking!) about his funk band that no longer exists.

Blackfriars has been refurbished - I don't know when, but probably within the past year. There is a new seating space up behind the door to downstairs, and the little dark corner at the back right past the bar is now the toilets. The whole place is much lighter too, with a paint and decor overhaul. It's nice.
