Bod remembered it was his birthday about fifteen minutes after he'd woken up. He'd been in the shower when it'd just popped into his head and he'd spent a few seconds just staring at the wall. Apparently, he was twenty one now and he had to marvel at how quick time had passed

Good thing he had a girlfriend who was more in touch with birthday behavior.

And that meant she snuck up on him with a red rose in hand. She showed it to him by embracing it from behind and sticking it under his nose. "Happy biiiiirthday."

Bod hadn't expected her to be out of bed so soon so he laughed in surprise and found his nose almost buried in the rose. It smelled good, though.

"Thank you," he replied with a shake of his head. "I wasn't expecting you to be awake for a few hours yet."

"Oh please, I've been awake since before you were," Kate scoffed, and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "Waiting."

To pounce on him with a rose.

"You didn't have to do that," Bod told her, smiling and looking down at the rose again. "That's very kind of you, though. Thank you for the rose."

Kate kissed his cheek again.

"Anything for my English Muffin."

Yes, she was going to be a little mushy here. Or possibly a lot.

"I'm making breakfast," he murmured, turning his face towards hers a bit. "Are you hungry?"

That was a great way to get kissed, all light and soft and playful. "Maybe a bit."

"Coffee will be ready in a few moments as well," he murmured against her lips. "I fed Seamus already too."

"Busy boy." She sounded amused. "It's like you don't understand birthdays at all."

After all these years, that was hardly a surprise.

"And what should I be doing on my birthday?" he asked her, amused.

[vanillajello]

"Well, you could've stayed in bed, for one thing," Kate suggested. "Enjoyed sleeping in and waited for me to make breakfast."

[nimeni]

"Would you have actually cooked?" he asked curiously.

[vanillajello]

"I might have! We'll never know now." But she gave him another kiss on the cheek, so maybe it didn't even matter that much. She was still hugging him. "You screwed up, there. But it's okay, I forgive you."

[nimeni]

"Next birthday," Bod said, snickering. "I'll do my level best to stay in bed and let you cook breakfast or pour cereal into a bowl."

"I could still do that last thing." Maybe in a second. She kissed his neck, then nuzzled it. "I mean, I got you a few actual presents too, but I could do that too."

"You didn't have to get me anything," Bod replied quietly, closing his eyes and sighing. "You're all I need."
