Dialogue in English textbook

In one of the textbooks we use at Deaf School...they had this dialogue:

Ms. Lee: Be quiet, everyone! What are you doing, Karen?
Karen: I'm studying, Ms. Lee
Ms. Lee: Well I think you're reading a comic book. Put it away.
Karen: OK

Maybe that sounds alright when it's reprinted here...but the illustration that goes with it is of the chubby and scowling Ms. Lee grabbing the comic book away from a SOBBING karen, while her classmates look on in horror and disgust at what has just happened.

Meanwhile, there's another group of illustrations on the page that describe things you can do in your free time. One of them is a picture of a pretty blonde in a low-cut red-dress holding a cocktail and flanked by two leering men in business suits who seem to be about to close in on her. The caption says "a good time". The girl is shrugging her shoulders and smiling as if to say "oh well, i guess that's what i get for dressing so provocatively...tee hee"
