Hard to believe so much time has passed since I last updated about Thomas specifically. More than a month. And what a month it's been. I probably say this every month, but he is a completely different animal compared to a month ago.
He has so much more control now, over his hands, arms, legs. He manipulates toys with his fingers, turns them over to inspect them, and have just started picking up a round ball off the floor with both hands (and then proceeded to lick it all over, of course).
We sold his swing because he was getting too big for it. He is also no longer content to just sit in there to enjoy the motion and look at the mobile; he wants to be moving. Seeing how he loved to bounce up and down when held up to a standing position, we bought him a jumperoo off Craigslist and boy was that a good purchase. He goes mental in that thing, jumping like he's been fueled by caffeine and laughing away.
He started crawling at 5 months (first time was 4 months 25 days). Way too early compared to most babies (apparently the average is 7 months?). But then his daddy crawled at 3.5 months (!!) so we knew where that came from. (Yes, it's Andy's fault!) He was moving backwards in the beginning. He would get up on all fours, push with his arms and slide backwards. He was fairly mobile even moving backwards, getting himself stuck in interesting places. Such as...
... under the sofa...
under the his jumperoo...
under the dining table and chairs...
under his rocker...
and under the chair bed.
Then he started moving forward. First it was creeping around on his tummy commando-style. Then he started rocking back and forth when he's on all fours, or kicking his bum into the air like stationery bunny-hopping (having not figured out how to coordinate moving his arms at the same time to move). About a week ago, he started to get up on all fours and slide forward. And then just an hour ago, we saw him properly putting one hand/knee in front of the other in pursuit of a toy we were waving just out of his reach. He had such a determined look on his face, it was hilarious.
Started weaning him this past month as well, with his first taste of vegetables. After the bland taste of rice and oat cereal, his first taste of strong and sweet tasting carrots didn't go down that well. Made for fantastic photos though:
After that I started mixing in tiny bits of the carrot into his regular rice cereal, increasing the portion with every meal and he took it just fine. He has now tried sweet potato, butternut squash and peas. Will go on to fruit next, probably pears. I would like to give him mashed avocado next week before we leave, since it is likely to be cheaper and fresher here compared to in Singapore.
