I came across this very thoughtful installation when I was at Tokyo Narita airport. It was a bit of a trial having to go to the toilet sometimes when one is at the airport, particularly if the toilet cubicles are not large enough to accommodate a trolley. (Hmmm, I didn't realise that the community posting is for members only.) That's actually one of the most frequently asked questions.

I used to eat my bento either cold (fridge in the coffee room at work) or at room temperature (no microwave at work) in the UK.

But now that I have access to a microwave at work here, I tend to heat it up before eating (crave hot food when it is so cold in the winter). Otherwise I often just eat them at room temperature (before the weather got cold). If I plan to microwave my food, I have to pack them in the more sturdy (but plain) Lock & Lock and similar tupperware containers. My pretty Japanese bento boxes tend to be not suitable for microwave.

If Megan wants hot food, an insulated food jar can be very useful. I have seen them at Takashimaya (particularly the more expensive and difficult to find Zojirushi branded ones). Lunchinabox.net has excellent reviews of different types and how to use them:

Do u cook yr food in the morning before packing? So it'll just cool naturally til lunchtime?

She brings an insulated jar now. Works ok.

Food that I eat at room temperature, I would cook in the morning and pack for lunch that day. Bento to be eaten cold, or to be heated up in microwave just before lunch, I would pack them the night before and keep in the fridge overnight.
