I don't know 'the second sex' but she should avoid reading it. I think she should go for Marx, or Mein Kampf. Sit in a corner with her Coke and whatever, and really LISTEN to what these books are saying behind the obvious. THEN she could go and bash Cass round the ears for DAYS and Cass wouldn't get a word in edgeways. Teehee. She'd have a ball with Anton too cos he's maybe not read them, not 'properly'... teehee.

I think that if Ellen knows what she's doing, she'll give "The Second Sex" a good read (it's by de Beauvoir, it's a feminist classic), then go on to read Naomi Wolf.

Or better yet, she can outdo both Anton and Cas by reading...Chomsky.

OOh yes Noam Chomsky...that'll be more uptodate and really worth airing!!!! I've got a couple of his... must get them down again. Hell I've got such a lot of catching up to do.

You'll see I am struggling with a baaaaad historical tome... a Booker Prize one too... I've ranted on Chatter page about it. ICK.

There are so many ways that Ellen's reading list can go, even if it's just to spite Cas.

I miss being able to read politics at will; med life isn't conducive to being a dreamy politically inclined sort.

Sadly that old-time discussion soon lands one with the flat realisation that one can talk 'What IF' until the cows come home, but all the talk from us small voices can't change the reality of Those Out There. I think the days of Revolution for Better have gone now. Or is it me being agedly resigned?

I think that they haven't gone yet (or maybe I'm still young enough to dream). I think that aiming for big upheavals and waiting for them to happen isn't the way to go; we have to factor in change as being part of our personal agendas instead of waiting for grand events and fearless leaders.

I just feel that there aren't enough of 'US' changing our personal agendas to make a difference. There are THEM out there who don't even NOTICE, but just demand 'their rights' Bah!!!! Not for the good of others, but just THEIR own rights. sod you Jack I'm all right stuff.

OOOoh I'd love to have a really good time in a student's room with us all on the floor, on chairs, beanbags and cushions, all holding forth... we sorted the world then!!!!

I agree. It's always about someone else making a change, and us not making our lives the agent of change.

And I miss those student room discussions; used to have those all the time, now I can only have those with a few good friends in some choice places.
