jan28: ethnic cheer

Tonight was a filmmaking networking event here in SF. Some friends of ours were being honored, so we went along to cheer them on. They are the editor and dp of this music video, that was screened:

it was an interesting event--although i mostly feel awkward at these things. there are usually a lot of vendors who are the sponsors who are trying to promote their gear, which is all fine and dandy, but i am not rich enough to buy a substantial amount of their product as they would like. still, some of their demos are interesting, although walking past the tables, i feel as though i am walking past wolves waiting for prey.

Michael Blieden also came and gave a talk -- he shoots a lot of the short little videos that air during Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and has done quite a few music videos and opening intros to the SuperBowl and the Emmys. I caught him afterwards and talked to him a little bit about his work and what it was like shooting the way he did. It was very insightful and he is a wonderful guy.

I am just completely unprofessional because I go to events like these with no business cards on me. The schmooze part is something I find a bit awkward, but I've got to better about it. And as ridiculous as my business cards would be (because, come on, let's be realistic--sort of), I really should gall-up and just make something awesome so that other people can see how awesome I am. : ) Even if I don't want to be completely accessible all the time.

I also finally, FINALLY wrapped TGD last night (this morning?) at 5 in the morning. It feels ridiculous, but I'm happy with the final product. It is 27 minutes long, and my finger is in every pie--I mean, department. Future projects will hopefully result in not quite so much megalomania. Otherwise Tyrant Julie shall try to overtake the world!
