What is happiness worth?

So I was denied the position I applied for today. Official response is “we decided to go for someone, more qualified…”

Immediately causing this question to form within me, “What is happiness worth?”

Why do I work at a job that I hate? I am tired of supporting something that is so fallible that I have been reduced to saying, “It will not matter if we replace your units, the same thing will occur with them as well.”

The product is bad and no one seems to be doing anything about it.

3 weeks ago a customer that we had multiple issues occur with had asked me for a letter, stating that we were at fault for all the issues that have occurred. He wanted to clear his name with his customer (the end user). Rightfully so, hell it was 100% our fault. Yet three weeks ago when I asked my manager and supervisor to write the letter (after being told I shouldn’t) they responded with, “Sure.”

Every week I have received a letter from this customer requesting this letter to be written. I finally responded with both my manager and supervisor CC:d so that the customer would clearly see their emails and stated “I have done what I can to get this to my managers for them to write the letter. Your request is currently being processed.”

The follow week (Monday) I got another email from him. “May I please have the letter I requested 3 weeks ago? So I forward another email to my manager stating, “Is there any update for this simple letter that I requested 3 weeks ago?” No. Nothing.

I just sit here and take complaints. My job is not tech-support its damage control, and I lost hope in the product long ago; to think that Cardio Theater is the #1 “entertainment product” in gyms today. That doesn’t say as much for us as it says about our competitors.

So I have been thinking. I am tired of being the guy that does all the work. At first I held on to the fact that I would have a good review and I would get a good raise. That backfired when they prorated my ass. So then I figured with such a good review, I shouldn’t have a problem getting into something away from this crappy product, and more importantly, away from the phone. That backfired when I got shot down for a job that I was qualified for and had a hell of a review to back me. Hell I am a model fucking employee, this is bullshit.

So this ranting brings me back to my original question. What is happiness worth? I feel like pulling some Zen bullshit and just quitting. Give up all world positions (and the debt that they acquire) and just see if I can live happily.

I wonder if I can get out of my lease with my car? I doubt I could work anywhere and be happy making what I make. I only have CS experience and thus only am capable getting a CS job. This is where the dilemma is. I want to quit. I must quit in order to be happy. I have given up on the company policies to make any changes to make my job any more fare or balanced.

So I keep thinking about the last scene of Office Space. Where the main character becomes a construction worker. I need a career change, and it is going to cost me a lot. I’m guessing about a 50% pay decrease. Should be fun. Two things are stopping me. 1) My car, over all payments for it and insurance are about 400$ a month. 2) College. If I can stick this job out a few more weeks, tell the end of the quarter I can get reimbursed about 600 bucks.

Things that make you go hmm….
