Some guy told me to go to the high school, because they have free meat. So I go over...[long, indignant pause]...and it's already GONE.

...I've been doing some exploring around here. So here's my question-what's there to do during the day, anyway?  Any sort of work or anything, or do we spend all day

There is. As you mentioned work, it depends on what kind of work you're capable of as to whether it's here or not. The city doesn't have many established jobs.

There doesn't seem to be a shortage of meat, so I don't think you'll miss out too much.

It wasn't at the cafeteria. Where do I have to go?

The cafeteria isn't, as far as I know, worked at on all days. If there's no meat freely available at any given time, you'll either have to trade for it, find some yourself, or wait.
