Haven't posted anything substantive for a while again, so here's a bullet-list of miscellany, yay. :)
- I've been listening to a lot of podfic lately. I've been kinda slow getting started as a podfic listener - partly for organizational purposes, and partly for the same reason that I don't READ a lot of fanfic: disconnects between the type of story that is popular in fandom-at-large and the type of stories that really perk up my ears in interest. It took a while for me to shift my mindset from "Looking for things that look like exactly my cup of tea!" to a more general interest in trying things just to sample a good cross-section of fandoms/readers/etc.
That said, I've been quite enjoying myself in Sherlock fandom, in particular. There are a number of really deliciously long and meaty case-oriented podfics that have made me very happy. Though I've come across some really lovely, atmospheric stories in other fandoms, too. I hope Amplificathon does a "recathon" this year, as I've finally listened to enough to be able to do a meaningful rec list. :) (EDIT: Bwa-ha-ha! I'm psychic. They just announced the recathon today. Time to put my money where my mouth is and sign-up, I guess. :) )
- Speaking of recs (sort of): I seem to have taken several significant steps towards organizing a... challenge/exchange/event/thingie that's been in the back of my mind for quite a while. This is very out-of-character for me, but kinda exciting. :)
- In my ever rotating roster of OMG!SQUEE! fandoms, my current best love is "Giant Killing". It's a sports anime about an underdog professional soccer team that brings in a coach who has a reputation for transforming failing teams into "giant killers", and it hits my competence kink in ooooh so many ways. You have Tsubaki, the rookie with loads of potential (if he can get past his insecurities). You have Gino, the suave play-maker who makes every perfect pass look effortless. You have older, sturdy players who know their roles and don't need a lot of drama about it, and younger guys looking to prove themselves. And then you have Tatsumi, the coach, who's one of those "method to his madness" types who is played by my favoritest voice actor ever, Seki Tomikazu, and who makes me flail madly every time he gets to smirk at an opposing coach who's underestimated him. Soooo much love. THIS VID is mainly just soccer action, so you don't really get as much of the personalities, but I've still watched it a few more times than is probably healthy. :)
- I've also been putting a little more effort into finding the pockets of Avengers fandom that interest me, which has been fun. I'm increasingly smitten by Captain America. All my favorite stories are things that deal with his angst over being all unrooted and displaced in time. TOTALLY my thing. :)
- I fell off track with the 100 Things thing. I do intend to get back to it. See my original post re: my appreciation of the "lack of deadline" aspect. ;)
- In real life, my mom & I recently took my 8-year-old niece to NYC for a quickie visit. Her parents don't seem interested in travelling much, and the niece has a real affinity to theater-type -stuff, so I see it as my duty to give her some of these experiences that I didn't get until I was old enough to plan them for myself. It was so cool seeing her reactions to things. In particular, I kinda agonized over what show to take her to. I didn't want to do the Disney musicals, mostly out of kneejerk rejection of modern-day uber-commercialization of Broadway... but I didn't have a good read on how open she'd be to anything else. We ended up choosing "Anything Goes", and she *LOVED* it. Awesome! :)
