"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved."

-Helen Keller

Slowly she climbed up the mountain, staring up at the sky. Damn Inuyasha, how could he just leave her behind like this? He carried the monk and Kagome up! Then again, he didn't trust her much. She didn't blame him, she attacked him because of what Naraku said.

Ah, Naraku... the bastard. Part of her still couldn't believe he used her sweet, kind little brother to kill her family. Part of her was furious that he killed them in the first place. The other part was terrified for young Kohaku. Being thrown into danger like that, and ending up with such guilt--whether he remembered it at the time or not--because of him.

She wondered what she'd do after she saved her brother. Would she stay with the hanyou and humans he traveled with? Or would she return home with Kirara and Kohaku, to rebuild the village, and train a new generation in demon slaying? She had to admit, Kagome and Miroku weren't that bad, and even Inuyasha wasn't when Kagome threatened to use the subjugation spell.

Shaking her head, she carefully continued to make her way up the mountain. How could things have gone so wrong? Maybe if Kohaku hadn't come on that mission, her family would still be alive. After all, he was the least experienced, and the most likely to have his guard down. No, Naraku probably would have found a way to use someone else. Maybe even her. She knew everything happened for a reason, but what reason was there?

Maybe, maybe they had to become enemies. Maybe he was meant to live with the pain and guilt of killing them. Maybe, just maybe, she was meant to be the last of the taijiya village. It had made her stronger, in a way. And she had gained new, interesting allies. Even then she had to admit that she felt something for the monk, and Kagome had already become like a sister to her. Inuyasha and Shippou, though demons, weren't half-bad either.

Smiling, she finally got to the top. She had lost her family, only to gain a new one. Looking up, she saw Miroku standing there, hand outstretched. She smiled again, and took it. "Thank you, Houshi-sama."

"It's not a problem," he replied with a smile, and pulled her up.

"Come on, let's go. We've wasted enough time," Inuyasha muttered, before walking off.

Bringing up the rear, she thought again. Yes, it was meant to happen... and part of her was glad it did.
