So, yesterday (Monday) I went to register for classes. I met my geography prof. who seems like a wicked douche. Mike is going to be doing research with him for a whole year. I get to do research with Carlão (big Carlos) who seems much more jovial and helpful. He´s the head of Environmental Science here, the equivelent of Prof. Kahn at W&L.
When we entered the room with the other Prof. he started our convo by saying `This is the only time I will ever speak to you in English. People did not afford me the luxury of speaking Português when I lived in VA for 7years, so I will just treat you the same` I was thinking...OH SHIT! He seemed grouchy and bitchy during our talk. I dont like him very much.
Afterword we came back and Mike saw my cute apt and met my roommate. Apparently once again I got it better than him. He´s having drama with his living arrangements (we all know how much I LOVE drama..right;)) and my roommate offered to try to help him out. We all went out to lunch and had Churrasco, grilled steak, meat, etc., self serve sold by the Kilo. I ate this yummy fried fish, a little pasta, a little rice and beans, some salad, some pasta salad all for less thanR$4 and my can of Guaraná..oh my am I obsessed with that stuff was R$1.80. So R$5.80 or less than US$3.40 for a big meal:) (Today I had some steak, rice, beans, french fries and sausage...wierd combos I know..and a bottle of water for $4, 2dollars!!!) Rodrigo...our oh so cute friend...and Luciana ate met us for lunch.
After lunch we went to Lucianna´s because she said maybe Mike could live with her. Her house is sooo CUTE as are her kids and her dog. (Did I mention that everyone I know here has kids!! so wierd) There we met 2missionaries, 1 from São Paulo and the other from TEXAS...WTF Im never going to escape the south. Orginally he was like, YEAH AMericans...Im from Arizona.. Then Rodrigo said he wanted to go study at Oxford, post doctoral in Neuroscience, of course..lol...and the kid was like NO, you should go to University of Texas...and he made the long horn symbol (which means something bad here) and was like `Go Longhorns!!´ Then he made a big deal about how a long horn was not a ´bufalo´as we explained it to the Brazilians. Mike and I just rolled our eyes at each other.
Then we went downtown to get mike a new chip for his cellphones. (yes, they use chips here) and exchange Cristine´s matress. We got AMAZING milshakes...ovalmatine...yum! from Bob´s (Brazil´s McD´s..because the real one sucks here and is wicked expensive.) Then we parted ways, us girls walked back from the centro and stopped on the way home to buy groceries at SuperBom before having a chill night in.
Today I went running! It was so pretty. There is a big, long, straight, flat, well maintained bike path down the center of the highway I live on. There are big fields on the side, people with horse drawn carriage, and pretty views. On the way back, youre running back into civilization and you get a breathtaking view of the city with massive bluish-purple mountains rising behind it into the sun. I LOVE CAMPOS. I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT!
Today I went and got closer to finishing Matriculating. Things move so much slower here. Then I decided to go to the supermarket cuz I ate a lot of the fresh bread for breakfast. I bumped into Rodrigo who met me with a BIG hug and kisses...(I love this culture sometimes ;)) and then offered to accompany me to the restaurant for lunch, if that was where I was going. I told him I was going to SuperBom, as he was obviously on his way back from lunch, we hugged again and parted ways. Closer to SuperBom I bumped into Mike, he convinced me to eat lunch with him before shopping. I shopped, bought a lot for 10rais, 5bucks and came back. Cristine´s friend, Micaela (MY-KAY-EY_LAH) was here using the computer, and she still is here with Cristine. She just took a shower, people here really do make themselves at home in other peoples houses, thats kinda cool too.
Last night Micaela and her husband were here. It was kinda like put the American up on stage time and ask her how to say diferent things in English. Sometimes I feel like a circus animal. I will never again ask someone to say something in their native tounge when I find out they are from somewhere else. It gets old pretty fast.
XauXau for now.
