In Spain there are lots of different wonderful festivals. The most popular festivals are Carnaval, Semana Santa and la Tomatina.
La Tomatina is a battle of the Tomatoes based in Bunol Valencia. The festival takes place every year on the last Wednesday of August it has been ongoing since 1945. But it only lasts for an hour or two. After the festival is finished everyone shakes hands, hugs and kisses and goes to hose down and drink a lot of alcohol. There are some rules in this festival. The first rule is they can’t throw the tomato directly they have to squash the tomato first so it doesn’t hurt the other person. Second rule they must not rip t-shirts. The third rule is it is illegal to bring any kinds of bottles or objects that would cause an accident. The fourth rule is you must be careful to avoid the lorries which carry the tomatoes. As soon as you hear the 2nd banger you must stop throwing tomatoes.
The history of La Tomatina
In 1945 when an annual parade of enormous figures with big heads (Gigantes y Cabezudos) was passing through the streets of Bunyol. Some youngsters tried to join in the parade and accidentally knocked over one of the giants who got to his feet and started swinging out at everyone around him. To take revenge the youngsters grabbed some tomatoes from a nearby vegetable stall and started throwing them at him until the police arrived to break things up. The following year on the same last Wednesday of August the young people returned to the town hall square and started another tomato fight using their own tomatoes. Again the police came and in later years the local council tried to ban the 'El día de la Tomatina' but with little success as event continued to grow year after year and now it is one of the most popular festival in Spain.
